Short bit of background:
I've always wanted to play a fiver but I've tried many (including a sweet SR5 from Aaragorn) but I must have a mental block against five strings to match the dexterity issues... anyway, the five strings throw me bad.

One of the groups I'm playing with have been after me for some time to go to a five, so I'm thinking a 4 banger done BEAD might be the trick. I've strung up another of my basses this way and it seems to be working out ok for me.

I want to use a good bass (hence my desire to string my Sterling this way ;) ) and the HS seems like a great candidate for my circumstances. So that brings me to a string choice. Any suggestions on a set (type and guage) to maximize the "tight B" with the 34" scale length but not over exert the truss or the narrow neck? I realize a set up will be in order and that doesn't bother me. The other bass wasn't a problem.

I don't want to waste a lot of $$ doing experiments if I can glean past knowledge from others :)
Any suggestions? Any pitfalls?

Warning: I haven't tried this at home.

Not sure a set of Power4's will get you down to the B with usuable tension.

Probably have to go with a 5er set of some sort. I would think the nut would need altering. Factory uses regulars on the 5ers. Powers would be as tight as you can get with EB strings. They sound nice too.

In regards to the neck, I don't think tension from stringing it BEAD will hurt it. But like my warning infers, no direct experience.

Yeah, I should have been more clear- I'm looking to use a five string set and just ditch the G string. If I could find a guage that wouldn't require tweaking the nut I'd be quite pleased. I was able to do that with the other bass I tried it on....
Maybe something with a 120 or 125 B string?

EB Super Slinky 5 set B string is .125

Probably best bet unless someone with direct experience comes along.

any smaller guage and you might be getting into some pretty floppy territory.

I doubt the low b will fit in the nut. Mine didn't when i strung up my four string BEAD. I just used an old fret as a nut, but that was a cheap yamaha fretless :p You'll either have to modify the nut or get another one.
