I have a fretless Ray up for trade/sale. I'm really looking to trade to improve my amp rig, shooting for quality Ampeg. I advertised it locally in addition to this forum. A local guy is offering me an Ampeg SVT 4PRO Head (no cab) straight up.

I currently have an SWR WorkingPro 700 amp and a Goliath III 4x10 cab. If I trade this bass for this head, I'll be playing it through the SWR cab.

So! Would it be worth the trade? Will my Goliath 4x10 handle the power from the Ampeg amp? And more importantly, will I get the Ampeg tone with the SWR cab? Anything else I should think about?

Thanks folks!

Here's my Ray:

The SWR cab is quite hi fi, but if you dial the tweeter out it will reproduce the Ampeg head's tone really well. And the Goliath will handle the power easily - it's rated at 800w RMS, so you can safely throw 1200w at it.

Personally, and this is nothing against Ampeg user's, but that's one big heavy amp for todays standards. Its massive! If you really want the Ampeg tone, id get the new SVT 7 Pro which is light, fairly small, (for Ampeg) and is very powerful. It's also not that expensive at all.

I wouldnt trade, despite the fact the bass might be a similar value. But, Im not the world's biggest Ampeg fan!

I would consider maybe the Genz Streamliner 900, or a Markbass LM3, and put a VT bass pedal into it. Instant Ampeg tone, plus very light, powerful, and small.

Sounds like a fair trade as long as the head is not beat up. If that's the tone you want, and don't mind the 40+ pound weight, then it might work for you. JMHO.

The bass is worth twice as much as that heavy old ampeg.
