I just installed the ProTrack, Cruiser and the Air Norton S into one of my Silo Specs. pot values were upped to 500k. Here's what i've discovered so far.

Pro Track - This pickup in the neck is the shiznit! Anyone looking for a full humbucker tone with tons of sweetness should look no further. I'm amazed by how organic this picup sounds. It's like it breathes life into every note. the transparency of this pickup is amazing. It's got a very strong woody tone characteristic. Everything DiMarzio claims about this pickup is spot on! it's warm, it's friendly, and it sounds like a PAF. Except, it seems to have more definition than the average PAF humbucker from DiMarzios. Somehow this is one pickup they've got right from day one. It's totally killer! I shouldn't have bothered routing that SS with a humbucker in the neck. I shold have just dropped this one in for that nice Satriani neck tone! (yes, it HONKED!!!) Clean or dirty, this is the one pickup I will go to from now on for that sweet PAF neck tone in a single coil size! It's so controllable, it's a godsend for those who want to have a fatter tone in the neck without sacrificing dynamics and clarity. Think of this to be like the sweetest Les Paul you've ever played, but with the snap of a strat! (yep, it's THAT nice!)

Cruiser Neck - This was wired in the middle with conventional Strat wiring, meaning pup on it's own. It's a lot brighter than the protrack, and rightfully so, since it's supposed to have that single coil like character. Thing is, the inbetweens are still there, but a bit thicker than I'd like probably due to the pro-track. I'm still deciding if I like it like this. I might probably revert back to the standard Silo Spec wiring, since I want the classic LP like middle tone.

Air Norton S - Ah... this was a let down. It was bright, tight, screamy, and oddly, thin sounding compared to the Pro-Track. I wanted something warmer than this, with probably the same amt of power if not a bit more. I think on its own, it's probably very good. The pickup on distortion was tight and even for rhythms. Fantastic metal-ish chugs can be coaxed, but the lead tones were a bit too weedy. I sounded like Nuno on a bad day, know what I mean? I liked the rhtyhm tones, but sadly, the lead tones were a bit too "in your face". It wasn't as creamy as I'd have liked it to be. It's not that nice a pairing with the Protrack, and I think the inbetweens sound too much like the same tone with the protrack. I'm thinking wither the Tonezone S from here on, or the Fast Track 2.

All in all, this was a pretty cool test of pups. I knew how the cruiser would behave, so no surprises there. Both the PT and the ANS were surprising, thoug from 2 different extremes of the satisfaction spectrum. No clips yet, since the guitar is not with me, and is undergoing something cool. (will reveal as I get closer to the completion.)

I'm surprised at the Air Norton S. Are you sure it's was wired correctly? How does the sound compare to a single coil?

Well, of course it's far meatier and compressed compared to a Single coil. It gives a searing tone... For sure it wasn't OOP or wired in Single Coil mode...

Maybe I was just too pleased with the Pro Track?:p

It would be great if we could here the natural sound of the pickups. Will you upload some soundclips soon?

Ah, now I understand! I've been thinking of the Air Norton S for bridge position, after hearing the gorgeous harmonic sustain from a friends Chopper T. I need something stronger and meatier than single coil, with lots of harmonics but not as strong or aggressive as the chopper. Air Norton may still be my best choice. Would love to hear sound clips if you have the time and inclination.

Have you tried swapping the Pro track and the Air Norton? The Norton is said to be great in the neck position and the Pro Track should be great in the bridge position.

The chopper is an amazing pickup. I have one in the neck position on a guitar and it is great. Maybe put a chopper in the middle.

What about a Tone Zone in the bridge? Or maybe a FRED. It is a really warm pickup.

I'm actually preserving the SSS look for this guitar (you guys will know why when the time comes). So it's most likely the Tonezone S or (as Steve Blucher has recommended thru email) the BC-2. I got to see which one I can get my hands on first, since my local dealer is weak with their selection.

I've been recommended by DiMarzio to keep the cruiser in the middle, and split both the pickups when in position 2&4. they gave me a wiring diagram for this... This is so I can still get strat-like quack there. I was very tempted to go chopper for the middle though.

As for the neck position, you guys should really go hear the ProTrack. It's unbelievably nice...

My only question now for the wiring is, since the diagram gave me neck + middle for the position 3, how do I change it to Neck + bridge?

The guitar isn't with me... It's undergoing a major transformation... Should be done by Christmas! Hahahaha...

you want something bigger than a Single coil? Forget the ANS and Pro Track, as those still sound like real humbuckers. Try going for a cruiser bridge or a FT1. Chopper would be good too. They at least still retain some semblance of a single coil, though fatter, and meatier. The ANS in the bridge makes me sound like Kirk Hammett.:p

Will do once I get it back... In 2 months time!

I really really like the Area 67 in the middle. Its got an AMAZING Strat tone! And best part is NO NOISE!!!! Its also Really quacky when you want it to be. It of course cleans up real well and it can handle high gain just fine and it still sounds stratty unlike alot of other single coils. I use it in the middle of both of my guitars listed in my sig.

The Cruiser Bridge model for the NECK is really awesome!. I thought I was an all out humbucker guy, but this pickup might have changed that (in the neck position that is...bridge must be humbucker) haha. I cant speak about the singles for bridge, but I would maybe try a Fast Track 2?

I love the Humbucker from Hell. It sounds like a single coil, but high output. GREAT pickup and worth looking into.
