There's no overdubs on this thing......and a lot of it seems to be plain soundboard........which always does singers in particular no justice at all.

I'm wondering if this is a reflection on moving from a major to an indie (although a big indie) as I imagine that the budget to roll with a proper mobile recording operation would be out of scope...

Or maybe they just wanted a kind of fans eye view.......it's still good and throws some things into context whereas if this is what DT ACTUALLY sound like, what the hell does some of the other dross out there sound like? Score and Budokan are great but there's a lot of overdubs on there (like every other 'live' DVD or CD out there).

The mixes aren't particularly good on the songs (vox too loud and poorly eq'd on some tracks, no reverb to soften the sound, drums too loud in some tracks etc etc).

I actually think the 2nd dvd is a great documentary

Well...

I bought the 3CD/2DVD set...

While I'm warming to it, at first I was really REALLY not digging it. I think "Score" was the ultimate and this isn't that.

It's Dream Theater and I will buy, watch and listen to anything of theirs I can get my hands on but the video quality of this looks like VHS. Not that that's a bad thing, especially if that's what they were going for but as D.K. stated above...this feels like they went backwards.

They're still DT and they still play like nothing else but this really felt like a very raw, completely scaled back performance that I would see in a club here...not the SHOW that I've heard is a Dream Theater concert.

The video and sound is not as polished as Score or Budakon but I think the raw aspect brings a certain life to DT that i've not heard from them before. I feel more connected to the artists while watching this one. It has a more realistic feel and I really dig it. The sound is more organic and it feels more like you are 'there'. I also think it is nice to see some mistakes being made so we know they are freaking human!!

I say buy it and enjoy it for what it is... A fun trip around the world with DT!

I said earlier, I saw the tour and it was awesome.
This is a terrible DVD, and to call it "raw" is a shameful excuse for piss poor quality.
I've seen better quality bootlegs.
A real shame as "Budoken" is the opposite.

Great DVD IMO, but I am a huge DT/JP fanboy. At first I wasn't especially blown away, I was little put off by the quality, but once I sat down to watch it, I loved it. The extras are great too.

Oh and about the overdubs thing - I remember when Score was released, people speculated on whether or not LaBrie was autotuned. I guess this DVD confirms he was...

Great concert footage and interesting behind the scenes material as well. Nice to see that Labrie is a Montreal Canadiens fan - I wonder if that interview with him was shot in Toronto... :D

He was not, I can still hear him going out of tune in parts, albeit slightly. What he was was remixed and EQd probably.

BTW I liked Budokan more than Score. I can't listen to any of the songs with orchestra. Way too out of tune and barely rehearsed (if rehearsed at all).

I'll put it this way, when I bought Live at Budokan, I watched it 4 times in the next 5 days. When I got Score, I watched it 3 times in 5 days... It's been more than a week since I watched this only once. I'm glad I didn't buy the uber-expensive version. It's a good DVD but it has zero staying power, looks like.

I still watch Budokan very often. Such a perfect example of a concert DVD.

I'm in no way disappointed, because I knew what I was getting.

Portnoy said on his forum that people going into watching this DVD expecting another Budokan or Score were in for a big disappointment. Personally, I love the DVD and I like thats its not all pro-shot, perfect pitch, no mistakes, etc.

I think all that adds to the DVD and really gets the point across that DT aren't robots, they're normal people like you and me. I'm sure the next DVD will probably be pro-shot.

yeah, i was starting to get scared, i thought that people could play with no mistakes.
this DVD is cool, it's real, it's fun to watch.
my only complaint is that sometimes the audio mix is not the best.

I like it personally. It reminds me of 5 Years In A Livetime. I saw them in Atlanta and it was an AWESOME show. I like seeing and hearing people mess up on occasion because it lets you know that they're human and doesn't make you feel so bad when you do it! HA HA! My only complaint, if you consider this one, is the excessive use of the "F" word. Needless to say, you can't watch it around the kids ;O)

I've watched about half of the DVD now and listened to the CD/iPod about ten times and it continues to grow on me.

I don't think it anywhere near as polished as I have come to expect from DT...I'm also wondering if this has something to do with the fact that they're no longer doing the "evening with" stuff?

Anyway, I may have been giving it a rough time for no good reason. It's not what I'd call in the strictest sense of the word a "Concert DVD" but more of a fan DVD with concert footage.

The second DVD was great. The documentary is fantastic!

So,

I'm finally getting through the complete DVD...my main TV in the theater room died on the last day of September and Santa brought me a NEW Plasma just before Christmas.

The footage is very uneven but I guess that's what they were going for...and as I said in my last post, it's growing on me.

I really am getting into the kinda "RAW" sound mix on this set. I've also noticed, or at least *think* I've noticed that the performances on the DVD don't always EXACTLY match what's on the CDs. I KNOW "Surrounded" is different. I believe there are a few others that are as well.

I do have a question though...what is the bass that JM is playing on "Take The Time"? It's not a Bongo and since I'm not as familiar with the Big Stringed Stuff as I am the others, I thought I ask the experts!

Oh...by the way, Happy New year my friends! I hope your holidays have been as great as mine!

Dang, John looks like he's gonna be the Guitarinator soon...he's huge. Maybe BP is sending him 100lb JP models to work out with?
