I've been a relatively recent convert to flat wounds, having put them on my P-Basses and really liked the way they sounded on them.

I recently got my first EB/MM, an SR4, and have been gassing for a set on that as well after reading on here about how nice they sounded on the Music Man basses...the rounds that were on it when I got it were pretty old...I think they were D'Addarios and even with the aged strings, the bass sounded very nice.

Well, I got some D'addario Chromes (EBC82's) this past weekend and put them on. I have never heard a bass's sound transformed as this bass was after putting them on. I was simply stunned and couldn't put the darn thing down ...muted, pop and slap, funk, jazz, rock...it's all there. It's just dripping with tone.

I am finding myself gassing for a EB fiver now. I have a feeling it will blow my Carvin LB-75 out of the water.

I also have to recommend Ernie Ball's very own flatwound strings! The Group III flats are the stuff. I've played TIs, La Bellas... etc... but on a fretted SR, the Group IIIs are my favorite.

unfortunately, no one in the area sells the EB group III strings...it would be Mail order only for me...plenty of Slinkys (which I do like as well) but no flats :(

I had gas real bad and I got the Chromes at a great price so I couldn't refuse.

I am going to order some Group III's in the near future and pop those on my last P-Bass that doesn't have flats on it yet...expecting great things.

You're in central NH. You should be able to pick up your order at Just Strings and save on the shipping.

I too recently sold off a Carvin LB75 to fund another Stingray! I have never tried flats on any of my EBMM basses but may just have to give em a shot!

I just tried flats on an SR4 for the first time, I was fine with rounds with lots of dirt on em but I always dreaded changing strings and having to wait until they lost that uber brightness. I've been finding that when I play the bass by itself I wonder if I've made the right choice but then with the band it seems to sit nice in the mix. They're growing on me.

Well, raise my rent! I didn't realize they were in Milford, NH...but it's still about a hour's drive for me each way...I wonder if they would let a customer pick up at their business. I'll have to drop them an email. At worst case, I'd have the strings the next day if I didn't care to make a 2 hour trip round trip.

Thanks for the heads up.

Yes, they let you pickup at their location. I haven't done it b/c it's too far for me but it's an option.

Joined the group III club today. I have resisted the urge to go flats for 25+ years, but after all the chatter about it here, I though why not? Now I still sound like me, without the fret rattle and HF nonsense that only competes with the rest of the band. And if I dig in, it still gets nice & nasty. Oh, and I reckon they feel great too. Rumour has it these things outlast rounds ten to one... a win all round I say! Thanks for listening. Pete.

Great news Pete.

I switched to flats for half of my basses due to buying a new model 7ender a while back last year, and the owner had put on flats....I immediately bonded with them.

Years back, I would never have gone for the flats sound, but Im getting into different styles and the sound of flats really works for me.

EBMMs can be as aggressive as you like, so flats still come through with some zing (if you want them to). If you dont, just EQ or leave EQ flat.

Stingrays and flats just work amazingly well. I cant wait to get my Big Als and get some flats on them.

EB Group IIIs are super value IMO, as they sound great, feel great, and last forever. Plus, they are probably the best fit for EBMM instruments.

Even with the 'almost', I think this is hyperbole.

Dang it Jack... now I have to Google hyperbole....
