Hey guys! I normally reside on the bass side, but today I get to join the side of the light! For Christmas this year I decided to buy my first Music Man guitar. I've owned about six or seven Music Man basses over the past five years, so I knew I wanted a Music Man guitar in my stable. I'm not a serious guitarist (I mostly like to noodle and play infrequently at church), so I was looking at used guitars. I found a used Sub 1 at a Guitar Center near Chicago. After figuring I had the money, I ordered the guitar and had the guitar shipped to me. I was told that the guitar had some neck wear, which is kind of what I was expecting from a used guitar.

When I got the guitar, the neck wear was much worse than I was expecting. There was some normal wear, but the rest of the neck appeared to have been exposed to heat. Some of the finish looked bubbled and melted. My brother and I determined that the previous owner may have tried to get a bump out of the wood, but forgot that water and heat doesn't work on a finished neck. So, I've sanded down the neck to remove the finish and will probably put a clear satin finish on it. I'm also looking at putting new pickups in the guitar as the stock pups sound too dark and bassy for me.

I will post pictures in a while.

I would definitely complain if it's not what was represented. They will knock off some bucks. Did you take photos before you sanded it?

I called on that guitar too the reaso I passed on it was because they did tell me about all the wear the guitar had on it. They told me the previous owner sanded down the neck then tried to repaint it.
Anyway good luck with the guitar thy are great.

Sounds like you got a great deal on a decent guitar (even with the thing on the neck). Sometimes it's fun to do the "fixes".

I recently got a SUB 1 and thought that the pickups were too bassy as well. I replaced them with a Dimarzio Mo Joe and a PAF Joe and I'm really happy with them. Much more articulate and and a little more sizzle. That body is a big piece of poplar...

Nice score! I love my sub 1. I also replaced the pickups (and pickguard :D) as they didn't suit me. I have an Evolution in the bridge and an Air Norton in the neck. For my Sub, a previous own sanded down the neck.. I finished the job and gave it the gunstock oil treatment.. Fantastic feel. Fixing can be fun! although it sucks to get something not as expected/misrepresented by the seller, big chain or not....

I wish I could find a sub hh (with trem) over here but the prices are a tad high.

Nice score - I'm sure you will love it.

Regarding the neck - people here have sanded the neck down and then used the gun stock oil/wax treatment a la it's bigger siblings.

It's far easier to do than re lacquer the neck and imo gives a better feel to the neck.

From my experiences, next time have your local guitar center have the guitar shipped to them and then deal with them. I bought my AL that way and it worked out great. Plus you can just take it local if you have an issue and you get to see the guitar before you buy it up front.

Congrats on the purchase, the Sub1's are excellent guitars for the money. Glenn |B)
