Well, I got my fretted Bongo back together tonight after putting gunstock oil on the back of the neck. It feels absolutely amazing.

Here are some pics:

And, if you've made it this far, here's a quick test I recorded with the Bongo once it was back together.

I'm not normally that note-y but I wanted to check to see if there were any spots where I fretted out. That's the Bongo into my TrueVoice preamp directly into Cubase with no EQ, effects, etc. I am really really happy with the tone I'm getting right now.

Very nice! Loved the sound clip. Still thinking about the neck. If you love it, that's what matters.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm really happy with the tone I an working with now.

The Bongo is wearing flats with dark blue silk. I have the BassMute in position 1, so there is some damping, but not the full choke of position 2. The pickups are panned about 90/10 in favor of the neck pickup, and about 60/40 in favor of the mags over piezos. I think I have a slight low mid bump in the EQ, but it's pretty close to flat.

The TrueVoice preamp has a 6SN7 tube and I have the tone knob set at about 65% to get a nice clean vintage tone. I'll also flip the bright switch on from time to time for some added 'clonk.' I also use a pick about 40% of the time.

I've got a Acoustic Image SA Focus on the way that I will use in conjunction with the TrueVoice and an Epifani 112UL so I get that same tone live. :D

Heh. I'll take those comments.

FWIW, the naked neck is a result of wanting to smooth out a couple of places on the back of the neck where the clear was flaking off. After I went through to the wood (I was using wet 800 grit paper), I decided to go ahead and clear it off and gunstock oil the whole thing.

I don't recommend this behavior while the warranty is still active, though.

If you'd prefer it to look a little less like that pic of the shaved cat ;) you could always mix some blue stain in with the oil finish and apply with some fine wet and dry, then a couple of coats of stain-free oil finish and then wax.

If you prefer it like it is then you don't have to do anything, of course :)

Who can argue about the neck when you've got chops like that?

You should come out to Maddie's tomorrow night. We're playing from 8-12p. I can't promise chops, but I can promise some amazing ribs. :D

Great playing and great tone!

You've really gotten a good combo of old-school tone with good full-range sound AND great low b growl. You could do jazz, motown, funk, and roots rock with that sound and kill!

Makes me want a MM w/ piezo.

I like that neck and the way it looks. It sounds like a bongo with flats being played by a killer musician.

Thanks for sharing all of that. It rocks.

Thanks for the heads up. I will try to make it. I just googled Maddy's and I know where that is. Used to live 1/4 mile from there.
