new guy has an SR5/SR4 comparison question

So I got the SR5 I had been wanting for a while and then quickly bought that sweet LV Gold SR4. After spending some time with both it seems that the SR5 has a lot more mids in it making for a much fuller sound the the 4 (when eq'd flat). Am I hearing things right? Would you all agree? I'm guessing it's the different pickup/electronics. I can eq the SR5 to sound like the Ray, but not so much the other way.

The SR and SR5 have totally different pickups, which would account for your hearing things differently. It's not your imagination! The SR has an alnico pickup, which is "warmer," a little less detailed on top and with a slightly less agressive midrange. The SR5 has a ceramic pickup, which is a lot more "sparkly" on top with emphasis on the high mids (at least as I hear it). If you want a four-string with the SR5 sound, grab a Sterling - it's got a ceramic pickup.

thanks. I new about the pickup differences. I was just wondering if everyone hears them as I do since this is my first exposure to EBMM. the SR5 definitely has a wider range and more "open" tone IMO. I dig it.

Yes the tone of the sr5 has more mids, which can make it appear to sound more open, etc, and all of those good things. Most noticeable in the high end. The sr4 has a bigger bottom most likely, as well.
