Im new here, im a regular poster over on the ESP Guitars Mesage Board (Imperium there), i have 2 ESP LTD ECs, Fender Highway 1 Strat and a Washburn Accustic for guitars.

But since i have a little Musicman GAS at the moment and have failed on getting info any where on this anywhere, can any one tell me a little about the Musicman SUB Guitar. Basically how good are theese guitars as i can get one for arround £299 and am wondering wether to take the plunge or not as i do plan 1 or 2 new axes this year.

Im intrested in getting one for a modding guitar, basically i want to put some Petrucci eske touches to it in respects to pickups.

Im looking for comparisons on the Trem and hardtail version, should i go for a single hum or a HH one, and whats the general view on them.

Thankls again.

Personally, I think the pickups are great. I would recommend the HH version.

Overall a solid guitar, especially for the price.

I see me having a trip into get one as soon as i can.

If i can find a black or white one i will get one of them as i dislike the metallic and lumpy finished ones, the look cheap. Altho i could get one refinished i guess.

I love mine, it slays. The quality is top notch, pickups are excellent, and the neck is insane. It's nice and light, and balances well also. The neck finish is nice and smooth, not sticky like most. The textured finish is great too, since you won't ever have to worry about damaging it. I also used to be an ESP/LTD guy until I got one of these, and quite frankly they shouldn't go for this cheap

If you swap pickups, let me know if you want to sell them ;)

Edit: forgot to mention, the tremelo is incredible as well, no more floyds for me.

Hear you on the finish, may just get one, the pickups will not get sold as i like to keep all stock parts for my axes incase i sell and want to keep certain after market upgrades.

One question about the trme, how does it compair to a USA Fender trem like the one on my 2007 Highway 1 strat and the 2008 USA Standard Strats for example???

The MM trem is the best tremolo unit available today, period.

Sounds as good as a real old milled steel 6-screw fender (which is to say, way better than the new zinc crap-block fender bridges), and stays in tune almost as well as a floyd, not to mention the feel is superb.

Theres a used SUB at a local shop and it's nice, I'd probably have snatched it up by now if it wasn't a hard tail.

And no pain in the @$$ locking bridge or nut ;)

Do a search on this forum. You'll find lots of Sub love. Those of us who have them, love them. To my knowledge, all the finishes were textured - which is just one of the hundreds of reasons I love mine....no fingerprints, smudges, etc.

Personally, the LAST thing I'd do is replace the pickups. The neck pickup is amazing, and I can get tone out of that thing that I simply can't get with my petruccis or lukes.

Also, the trem is the way to go - you get locking tuners that way. The hardtail doesn't have them.

The SUB is a great guitar and i would recommend you go for the full monty, trem and double pups. I had one and it was my first EBMM but it led to me buying an Axis and a JP6 so it got very little love (and so I just sold it to my cousin for 300 notes in the hope that i can ween him off his current axe manufacturer of choice...mentioning no names!).

There is a shop here in Worcester who has a brand new one for sale. Its on for £650 (which is more like the original retail) but as they are discontinued and he has had it on display for about 3 years, i would imagine he is open to offers!

Otherwise they show up on ebay from time to time

They have the same trem (except with no back-routing), and the pups seem to put off a different vibe. In my opinion, the SUB pups are the most awesome thing I've ever heard, and I wish I knew what they compare closest to. Right now I'm looking to get a pup set from one, I might be about to score a neck pup for $15 shipped

I've been playing the hell out of mine for the last two years and will continue to play it even though I have a new MM. It just feels right, I love this guitar, mine is a hardtail, and I want to get a trem model too, as soon as a sell an F***** guitar.

Mine came with a black pick gaurd new.

 No they don't. The JP6 trem is completely different from the Sub trem. The Sub trem is closer to the Luke trem. Both of them are great though.

Personally, it's the neck pup that does it for me on the Sub. The bridge pup, while fine, doesn't stand out as special to me.

The JP trem is actually no different than the vintage trem, they only have a different appearance ;)

As you can see below I have two Sub1's which are just mightly fine, well made, USA guitars. Since finding MM guitars I've sold all the others. I'll probably never go back to another manufacturer at any cost.

I had a Silo and wish I'd of kept it.

You mention modding. Since the Sub1 has 4 wire DiMarzio pups modding is easy. I was thinking of a PRS McCarty mod using a super strat switch. But a forum member sold me his Silhouette Special loaded pickguard (HSS) which will be going into one of my subs in the near future. All that's needed is to rout a single coil cavity between the two hummer routs. The Sub1 can also be modded to be like an Axis SS.

By all means get the Sub1. At the price you mention it's a bargain.

Touche'...I guess I should have been less 'know-it-all' in my post. My understanding was that the JP trem was designed jointly with John - and they went through a bunch of iterations. If you mean they are essentially the same because they both have 2 posts, a block, springs, a trem claw, bridge saddles, etc., then I can agree. However from a new user's perspective, I think they would be seen as very different - considering the cover, the shape, the back routing, etc.
