Hi,
I'm new to the EB Bass forum. I just recently purchased this brand new Stingray 5 H and was fortunate enough to find this one which weighs in at just under 9lbs! I also own a Stingray 5 HH weighing close to 11lbs. In comparing the two I have noticed that the preamp in the 5-H seems to be weaker than the one in my 5-HH. I was wondering if there might be a problem with my new bass. I know the pickup selectors are different between the two one 3-way the other 5-way but I am assuming that they utilize the same preamp.

I switched out the battery with a new one. When I set both basses with the pickup selector to the 1st or bridge position volume all the way up, tone knobs set flat, the 5-HH is louder. I can turn the bass tone knob all the way up on the 5-H and the bass or low end increases but on the 5-HH when I turn up the bass tone all the way it adds a considerable amount more low end. Same with the other tone knobs they seem to make more of a dramatic difference in the tone. With the tone knobs turned up on both basses the 5-HH is noticeably louder. The pickup heights on both basses look the same.

My 5-H is a great sounding bass but there is definitely a difference in volume and level of tone shaping available when compared to my 5-HH. Is this normal between the two models or is something possibly wrong with the 5-H preamp? Thanks

Not exactly sure what the pickup height is. I haven't measured but I bought this bass new so I am assuming the height was set by the folks at MM. It seems to be identical height to my 5-HH in looking at them both.

I bought this bass at Sam Ash Music. Under 9 lbs. Yeah, I knew there was something special about it the moment that I picked it up.

Thanks A.J. I will shoot those serial #'s over to you immediately.

All Musicman basses have a slightly different tone, just due to how alll the parts/pickup windings/wood interacts, but yeah, I'm sure this is an easy fix if it needs it.
