Hi all, just joined this forum. Lot's of good info here! I need your opinions.
I'm looking into getting an Axis SSw/ vintage trem. I currently have a Wolfgang standard stoptail which I love but i need a more versatile guit. I'm used to the HOT pickups of the wolfie, how do the SS pickups compare? Also, the neck differs in that the wolf is a little fatter/rounder? is the SS neck easier for fast lead runs? How will the SS sound with EVH custom pickups, anybody try this??

Thanks

Hey,

Let me be the first to welcome you to the board........sorry I can't help you with any of your questions (I play an EBMM SUB 1 and haven't spent much time with the Axis).....however I'm sure someone will be along shortly.....lots of Axis lovers here.... ;)

If you use the search function, you can find a couple of threads comparing Axis and Wolfgang in detail. Axis SS has the same neck and pickups as Axis. I think the consensus was that Wolfgang has hotter pickups, and "meatier" neck (whatever that means).
Personally I've never played Wolfgang, so I can't compare.
Welcome to the board :)

Hi Learman69, and welcome to the board...

I have both a Wolf Special (USA) and a few Axes (plural of Axis - you might as well learn it now, 'cause if you're like most of us, you're going to find that one is not enough! :D ). I find the Axis pups are not quite as hot (close, but not quite) as the Wolf pickups, and they are more refined and restrained tonaly, with greater versatility (imho)... They are close enough to the Wolf pups that you know they're from the same family, however - remember, Eddie had the final say in the development of both sets of pickups. The neck has a smaller radius on the Axis, and I think it feels a little smoother, with rounder shoulders and a more refined overall feel, but the big frets on the Wolf make for some easy bendin'... I think the bottom line with the whole Wolf/Axis comparison thing is that if you really like one, you'll probably like the other, but I personally prefer the Axis, and feel that the EBMM fit and finish is just that bit up on the Peavey, which makes the Axis a little more special...

Are you talking Axis SS (supersport), or AXIS?

The supersport with hums has a 5 position switch. Positions 2 and 4 have a significant volume drop from 1 3 and 5.

Neck pickup is dark, bridge is hot.

i've had a wolfie and an axis ss piezo, and i'd take the axis ss anyday. i'm from the south where we've been using peavey since the dawn of time....and frankly.....around here.....they've always been kind of a joke. "bang for the buck", and naught else!
