Hey guys! First time poster here looking for some feedback. I recently purchased a new Sabre Classic (black w/maple neck) bass from Guitar Center. I do not play an instrument at all, so this was a purchase for my son. My son plays guitar, but has never played bass before. He mainly plays Gibson LP's, but wants to play bass as well. He mostly plays classic rock, progressive, blues, and jazz.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting is that we had every intention of getting a Fender Jazz Bass prior to going to GC. When we arrived we found the Fender American Deluxe Jazz Bass and the MM Sabre Classic. My son didn't really have an opinion one way or another on which bass he preferred since he really doesn't know what to look for. The fender had a 'faster' (smoother) neck, but other than that… he didn't notice much difference. He enjoyed playing them both and would be happy with either. I personally liked the look of the Sabre, and it seemed to me that it may have been built better, but then again, I have no idea. It's purely visual with me. The rep at GC preferred the MM over the Fender. I have heard of MM before, so I wasn't completely in the dark. I've never heard anything negative regarding MM. I usually don't make a spur of the moment purchase, but in this case I did.

So, I guess I'm looking for feedback to see if this bass would be a good fit, or if it's something more specialized to a certain genre, etc. Does it make a good first bass guitar? Is it good for rock, blues, jazz? I guess I'm just looking for somebody to tell me, Yes… you did well. I have 30 days to return it.

Thanks!

Haha, Thanks! I deserved that. :) I just got home and dang... this thing looks better today than it did yesterday. Even better, my son has blisters from plucking those big strings! It's a keeper.

Welcome to the forum, Dad. Excellent choice for your son. The build quality and feel of an ebmm are second to none.

I haven't played a Sabre bass...but I own a couple MM basses and played almost every MM model and are really great basses, I also own more expensive basses, and the quality of the MM is very similar to them for half the price. goog luck with the Sabre!

Thank you everyone! We are loving this thing. At first the neck seemed sticky, but it appears to be worn in now. There is something about the neck finish/wood that just looks incredible. I've never seen anything like it.

biskit you made a very good choice. The lastest generation of the American Deluxe Jazz Bass was a big disappoint for me. I was lucky enough to find a Classic Sabre in my area tonight and I am very impressed with it. It's not like any other MM I've played and I've tried a few. I own a Classic Stingray and a Sterling as well as a number of Jazz Basses. Buying the maple neck was a good choice because you get to enjoy the quality of the wood EBMM used for the neck, either birdseye or flame maple and I prefer the high gloss poly necks to the standard necks like on my Sterling. You and your son are probably finding it easy to dial on the right tone with the 2 band eq. The Am Dlx Jazz you'll be figuring out for a few days and then some. And then trying to find how to use the active/passive, ugh. Again, great choice. I just gotta say you have to be pretty great Dad to get your son such a high quality bass as his first one. This could be the only bass he ever needs, enjoy!
