Hi Folks.

I'm a proud owner of a 1978 SR4 (sorry BP...)
i14.jpg

Now I'm expercting delivery of a brand new Ernie Ball MM SR4, maple, candy apple red, white perloid PG!!! (happy again BP?)

I'm exited to have two milestone instruments that have a time gap of exactly 30 years.

I've heard about diferences like weight, body shape, neck size and neck feel. 2EQ vs. 3EQ.... I'll keep you updated.

A nice pair: August 1978 - February 2008 = 30 years of history in bass making

So similar, yet so different....

...I know what you mean, a bit like mine, pictured below.

(Psst, guess which one of these two has smooth tuning keys, arrow straight neck and a battery that doesn't rattle inside its little compartment? :D)

Very nice, Andy! I love Candy Red with the white perloid and maple neck.

So, how do they compare?

So, how do they compare?

Well, two completely different beasts.
- The EB is a lightweight and the body shaping makes it ideal for long rehearsal session.
- The output level of the EB is much lower than the output of the pre-EB
- The neck of the EB is slightly thinner (no difference to play)
- The 3-band EQ is less invasive than the 2-band pre-EB
- The EB has absolutely no dead spots on the neck
- Soundwise they are both StingRays, but different dounds. The EB sounds... "modern" while the pre-EB sounds "vintage", especially on the G and E strings they sound different, but buth are beautiful.

...the only thing that makes it a really different instrument is the satin finish of the neck. Over 20 years with gllossy necks in my hands make it difficult to accept. I'm thinking of a mod.... (sorry, don't beat me...)

Interesting, thanks for taking the time to write that down.... I wouldn't have expected the older neck to be thicker, and the newer preamp to have less volume!

About the satin finish: Give it some time to grow on you... it might be you won't want to have it any way different after a couple of weeks :D

Nice addition man :) Honestly i couldn't cope with a glossy neck, satin is the way for me! I used to have some SR copies with glossy necks and the transition was pretty easy, i'm sure you'll learn to love it!

The refin and refret job was done in 1998 by a luthier/guitar shop in Zurich named "Gitarre Total"

Do you like the color? A forumite called it "Tomato Soup Red"... :)

Andy

Yeah it's hard to tell in a Photo, my fiesta Red P and J Basses look darker red in photo but in real life they are very Pinkish, But that color looks good on that Bass, Congrats.

Hi All.
After a few months playing the new EBMM, I have to say that the main difference with the 1978 is the dynamic behaviour.

The preEB has a very punchy and aggressive attak and a very short sustain.
The EBMM has a very clean and precise attak, sometimes a bit "cold", but it has an immense sustain.

I had to change my playing technique, I have to damp allmost all notes with my right hand to reduce sustain (note: I play fingerstyle).

The higher the notes the stonger is the dynamic difference.

I'm sure this is due to the neck (one piece vs. 2 piece maple) AND the fact that the old one has only 3 screws instead of 6 to fix the neck on the body*.

Again: both are excellent sounding instruments, just VERY different.

Have fun.

*has anyone ever tried to modify neck/body mechanical contact eg. by inserting a piece of something to reduce the surface of the contact between neck and body?
