NEW SR5 too much for my rig?

Hi guys,

I got my new SR5. It is sweet! No pics yet though.

Short and sweet of it:

AKG bug wireless
Boss-TU2
Gk 800RB (eq flat, buttons out)
Alesis Nano comp (effects loop)
Ampeg 8x10

I have the 10db pad in.
I have the master up all the way.
The boost up all the way and the gain at about 1/4.

Sounds like I am getting some fuzz on my higher notes.
No obvious farts or click sounds though.

Play every weekend and have not had any problems with the passive basses.

Does this active bass need more than the 300 watts that GK gives me?
Am I doing anything wrong?

Going to start with a fresh battery tonight and skip the wireless up front.

Thoughts?

CECIL.

Hi Cecil,

It sounds to me like you have to much gain at the preamp stage. When you refer to a 10db pad, are you giving the preamp a 10db boost or are you cutting 10db? Either way, I'd be inclined to back the gain off at the preamp.

Along with what he said you need to have a -15db when your playing active...

thats the only thing i could think is wrong...

Check your PM i want to talk to you about that akg bug

I have the -10db pushed in so it cuts 10.

I turn up the bass and mids about 3/4 of the way up on the bass.
Hmm.....I starting to wonder if I am just adding right back what the the pad cuts?

thanks for the help so far.

I have no clue... Im not a wiz i would say turn down the eqs on your amp some if your added to with the bass eq and the amp eq and they are both pushing that could be your problem

Fuzz on higher notes... i have that same problem you know what it could be it could be that your playing the natural frequency of something around your amp and its making it vibrate. You could move your amp... if not cut some of those mids i found that it you cut them mids some it quiets the buzz.

Try everything flat on the bass with the 10db cut at the amp. If you are boosting at the bass and cutting at the amp by the same amount, you probably are clipping the input since you're getting no net change.

buzz on the higher registers? hmm..

the 800rb is notorious for destroying cabinets, hopefully it's not that.

i would suggest more power either way...

check your batteries, and then connect your rig piece by piece until it begins doing it again if at all..

hopefully that will find the culprit.

I don't know GK amps but try the amp volume all the way up and the gain just barley up. Feed it preamp until you get where you are at.

What cabinets are you running? If it is a 2 x10 kill the tweeter.

The I don't know but want to help out anyway

This may be obvious but have you tried it without the wireless.

Wireless transmitters are very susceptible to front end overload. Have you reduced the input sensitivity of the Bug to compensate for the higher output of the SR5.

I had a similar problem with myBongo and a Sennheisser set-up. Just can't get it right.

Im stayin out of this!! :D

Hey Joel, will you PM the details of what youre talking about in regards to the 800RB. Im curious.

You're probably overdriving the wireless input. If you turn the SR5 bass and mid up to 3/4, you should reduce your SR5 volume by 1/4 or more. That should clean it up. Then increase the preamp gain on your amp. That will also give you some extra headroom on the SR5. When you turn the bass and mid down, boost the volume back up.

thanks

Thanks for all the input so far....

I have been spending a lot of time checking things and levels.
Pulled out items from the signal and seem to be ok.
I have the compressor in the effects loop before it hits the power amp so I am able to check peaks/limit. Things look good there as far as input and output levels go.

No distortion yet at home. The SR5 with a rosewood neck is a lot darker sounding than the maple boards huh? The eq is very diverse and I know it takes some time getting used to it.

My SR5 frettless is easy to get the right sound. Must be the TI flats. hee hee...

Take care guys,

Cecil.
