Hey there! I apologize in advance for this quite possibly being in the wrong area; however, I'm new to the forum. Can anyone confirm whether or not the JPX with the roasted neck has an ebony finger board? I've seen a contradiction on musiciansfriend saying rosewood AND ebony. This is slightly confusing an I'd prefer to stay away from rosewood. Thanks!

Welcome and you are in the correct area. I am pretty sure that it is ebony.

Good question, the only one I know about is the limited run that Guitar Center did that was GC 46th Anniversary JP BFR in Bahama Blue and ebony fretboard. I think they made 50 and I don't know if you can still find them.

Having both a JPX and JPXI I find the tone of the JPX to bit a bit fuller and more open while the JPXI is a bit tighter and more focused.

I love them both, but slightly prefer the JPXI. Not really due to the tone. More because of the flatter radius.

Thanks for the prompt reply! I hate to change the subject, but do you know of any high end EBMM Jp guitar with the Bahamas blue finish AND an ebony fretboard? I have played rosewood all my life and while it's nice, I really want my new guitar to have ebony.

I'm actually looking at a BFR JP6 with an all rosewood fingerboard. I've only played on ebony so would like to know what rosewood is like in comparison. I ask you because I'm assuming you've actually tested an ebony fingerboard and preferred it to the rosewood. That being the reason you want your new guitar to have ebony. So if you could enlighten me with a compare and contrast it would be appreciated. Anyone on the forum that is...

Yes! No problem. Well I own an ibanez prestige rga121 and a Gibson les Paul studio (both rosewood) and while they play extremely well, when I tried an ebony finger boarded EBMM JP, my fingers glided. The ebony is just a much harder and smoother wood that your fingers really shred on. It's really smooth and you don't get tired of feeling it. Rosewood feels a big more grainy and actually WOOD like. I never knew any different until I tried ebony. Rosewood is nice, but ebony killed it for me.

My experience is that the tighter grain in ebony as a fingerboard wood gives it a far smoother feel when bending notes, I'd be reluctant to go back to rosewood after it. Not that I dislike the feel of rosewood or I'm now unable to play it or anything, I just really prefer the slick feel of ebony.

Many say ebony also has a bit more snap and sparkle to the tone, whereas rosewood is a little warmer and more rounded. With the JPX, I think the ebony board is perfectly coupled with the chambered body, giving it a little snap but as yellowv03 says, the JPX is wonderfully open and rounded. The notes have a little more air and mature fantastically!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the JP12 will have the same flat radius as the JPXI, right? Would you recommend the JP12 over the JPX?

Yes the JP12 has the same radius. I still prefer the alder body of the JPX and JPXI to the basswood of the JP12.

Hmmm. In all honesty I'm leaning more toward the JPX than the jp12. How do you feel about the painted neck? Does it ever slow you down or is it just a mental barrier I need to get over? I know that the JPX has a roasted neck model. Have you had any experience with it?

EBMM's painted necks never feel sticky at all. I don't feel hampered any on them compared to my non finished necks. The roasted neck is not raw it is finished with clear so it feels just like the painted necks.

I went to guitar center today and played a jpx with a roasted neck an compared it to a Jp12. No difference in neck speed; you're right! I also tried one with a rosewood fingerboard. I almost can't decide what I like better because the rosewood was of such high quality.
