Hi everybody...:)

Just purchased a JP6 from an online retailer... waiting for it to reach my hands. :)
It'll be my first pro guitar, since I only have had lo-end brand X bogus Fenders :p

Just curious about which model of string MM guitars are strung with at factory.
Since I'm new to EB strings I'd like to know which type to choose for a couple of spare sets in my next purchase. I see regular, super, extra, hybrid, beefy slinky.... ???
I usually play classic/metal rock... home aficionado, no stage :D

Comments welcome.

TIA,

Marc.

Hi Marc, congrats - first pro guitar is very exciting! I think they're typically strung with 10-46s, which would be regular slinky. This is a pretty standard string size for any style. It'd be easier to do extreme bends and vibrato on 9s, but they could break more easily. New or infrequent players often go for 9s because they feel easier to play. It'd be easier to chug-chug and do heavy chord work on 11s, but for many players finger strength needs to be developed with very regular playing. Which tone sounds better is a personal matter, and some would argue there's not much tonal difference. Of course a 9-46 hybrid is available and I've found this to be a comfortable rotation with 10s.

There's really no consensus about what's the best string size, every guitar player has its preferences. For example, Steve Vai uses 09 low-end strings and I would not call him a new or infrequent player. String breakage has seldom to do with string sizes, for example.

Here's a MusicMan web site that lists the string sizes for all models shipped: Which strings do you use at the factory to string up your guitars?

Thanks, mates... I assumed it was a matter of taste, in the end... ;) but I wanted a more authorised opinion hehehhee..
The link ksandvik put to the FAQ section of the MM site was a good starting point to me... I know #2240 is the standard my guitar will come strung with, so I'll get some different ones to try later.

Thanks a lot... ;)

We are looking forward to your pics when she arrives. It's kind of a rule here that you must post pictures.
