Hey everyone, I'm new on here so I guess I should be introducing myself.
I'm 23, living in Luxembourg (google it, and when you can't find it, look between Belgium and Germany with a magnifying glass) which has a grand total of 3 guitar stores (rock on!), of which none sell Music Man.

Fortunately enough we're pretty close to Brussels, Amsterdam (where I lived) and Paris (where I'm from, but don't tell anyone) which all have shops which carry Music Man (I think I saw one Silhouette and one Axis in Amsterdam, and roughly the same amount in Paris... le sigh).

However this means that wherever I get my guitar, I'll have to spend even more to actually GET there (I don't drive and taking the car is often more expensive than taking the train over in Europe).

Since I recently found employment I decided to treat myself to an upgrade to what I already have (my main guitar is an incredible sounding HW1 Strat which I rewired with Bareknuckle/Duncan pickups).

I tried a Custom Shop Fender which was just about the best guitar I ever played, but which is also just about 1,200 euros more than I could ever afford... :|

So I've been thinking again about those dreamy moments spent with a Silhouette once (SSS, Floyd, the second best guitar I ever played).
The neck was just PERFECT. Narrow nut, nice C shape, just filled the palm of my hands. Never had anything so comfortable.

The only issue is that they're on VERY short supply in Europe and VERY expensive. About 1,700 euros for a Silhouette Special (22 frets, the version I want). Heck this one is pretty much what I'd like but look at the price... http://www.musicmanuk.co.uk/stock_silhspecial.htm that's 2,400 dollars.

What I DO know about the MMs:

They WILL be an upgrade on both US Strats and my current HW1.
They're cheaper than CS Strats.
They play like smooth, delicious strawberry jello.
Their fret dressing out of the factory are second to none.
Their Silhouette sound like Strats, feel like the Strat of the future and look like awesomeness mixed with a bit of extra awesome.

What I do NOT know:

Hardware quality
Finish quality
Every one of them I've tried had the strings set very low. Can you go fairly high on string height with the provided bridge? For instance with my HW1 Strat and the bridge all the way to the body, I had to get new saddles to get the strings where I wanted them. I'd either go for a S Special hardtail or with the two points trem. No Floyd.

I guess that's everything... I should be able to by the end of the summer... to celebrate the end of my trial period by the beginning of October maybe :D

I don't mind buying second either but the market in Europe seems very small... Buying from the US is becoming very not worth it now, what with the dollar being worth a lot more than even just 6 months ago and customs + charges...

Anyway, thanks if you guys can help out, and I'll try to stick around and be a member of the Ball family. Even though I could never use their strings. May as well us their guitars!

My firsthand experience: the hardware, fit and finish are all first rate. You won't feel the need to change hardware, or have any work done.

I set my strings higher than most people I know, and I've never had to get new saddles or screws. All of the range of adjustment you might want should be there.

Good luck in your search, I hope you can get one for a price that works. They're great guitars.

being a former strat guy myself i'm qualified to jump in here...

for many years i was a strat guy and felt as if that was "my guitar" i had some extremely high end starats and i was able to get my hands on a 20th anniversary silo... i bought it and sold all my other guitars within the week(no joke) and bought a standard silo (HSH).

i wouldn't say that they sound identical to a strat... but you can certainly get some of the strat type tones... but be prepared cause the silo will certainly kill any strat tonally, feel, fit, from strap button to the top of the headstock... this is TOP NOTCH!!!

i've not had any problems with the hardware... and i'll so as far as to say that the silo has even made me a fan of tremolos... i would lock my strat down and never touch it... i have a hard tail silo (my 20th) and my standard is a vintage trem and it's butter... stays in place, never goes out of tune and seems to return right back to zero without any trouble... i've been sohappy with my silos...
if you get one you'll know exactly what i mean.

Welcome to the forums.

Quick question, is it true that there are more corporations based out of Luxembourg than there are people?.

The fit and finish, quality, and craftsmanship of MM guitars are amazing. Honestly i have not seen a guitar with better quality.

Honestly not sure about your question, but I sure wouldn't be surprised. I work for an American company and we're based in Lux even though we have no operations here. Like you said it's very common. With the EU though it's becoming less advantageous for companies to do this.

You absolutely cannot go wrong with a Silo. It is by far more comfortable, ergonomic, stable and consistent than pretty much almost any other brand I have tried...especially for the money. The hardware is definitely top notch and both my vintage trems on the Silo Special (22 fret) and the 20th Anniversary Silo (24 fret) are set up to float and I have no problems with the tuning stability...just gotta lubricate the nut slots and bridge pivot points once in a while.

As far as pricing, unfortunately in Europe they are relatively much more expensive than say a vintage series US Strat... But from what I've played of higher end US Strats (GREAT guitars) compared to MMs (INCREDIBLE guitars), it's still worth it.

In USD, count about 2,000 at LEAST for a Silhouette without too many options, if not more.

I don't ever use a trem so I'm not concerned with tuning stability. I can make a decent nut either way so it's really not an issue, and all MMs I've played had a pretty great setup!

Thanks for the help everyone. I sure hope I can get to play a couple by the end of the summer.

Hello

You are French like me but I will speak English for our fellow knuckleheads ...
You cannot go wrong with the quality of EBMM guitars. The price are expansive in Europe but keep in mind that the price include : the VAT (20%), the custom fee (2%), the fee of the distributor (??? don't know this part, but a margin is at least 20%).
You can find a new Silo at more or less 1700 € :
Music Man Silhouette HSH BK
Musicman silhouette - Musicman - Electric Guitars - Knighton Music Centre
Music Man Silouette - MaxGuitarStore

On the second-hand market, if you are patient you can find a Silo for 1000 - 1200 €. A few months ago, I nearly bought a used Silo for 1000 €.

If you want a list of European dealers with stock, just ask ...

Thanks :)

A guitar store in Edinburgh was blowing Subs for 400 pounds about a year and a half ago when I lived there, I've always regretted not being able to go for one. They were very good guitars.

I don't want to go halfway though and regret it again. It'll be a Silhouette, not a SUB. Unfortunately it's hard to put down 1,700 euros for a guitar which I may not ever be able to play before buying...

Best I can do is wait until I have the budget and actually go to try them. Even so it's not yet given I'll find the one I want and I'll already have wasted the train ticket price... hard days for MM shopping.

Ideally I'd get a Special with hardtail or two points trem, rosewood fingerboard, in Sapphire Black or Blue Pearl in HSS or SSS.

Welcome to the forum!

A lot of people here have purchased Music Man guitars without ever playing them.
Myself included.
Music Man is the only company I would feel comfortable doing that with.
You won't be disappointed!

I bought my first Silhouette guitar without ever even playing one before... best instrument purchase I ever made. If you played one and know you like it, you should not have an issue.

Welcome to the group!

Another snub of the sub

"I don't want to go halfway though and regret it again. It'll be a Silhouette, not a SUB."

I'm happy you want a Silo. I've had two and they are both gone but my
Sub 1's are still here. You can't get a painted neck on a Silo. The sub 1 is one of the most verstaile guitars EBMM has made. Easily upgraded. Some here actually like the textured paint and the feel of a Sub 1. Some people like Steve Morse like guitar bodies without sculpting, and I do too. I'm sorry you feel like a Sub 1 is "halfway", as it truley is am EBMM through and trough. I've played Silos and Silohouette Specs and my Subs stand up to them in every respect.

Don't get hung up on looks, cause looks ain't everything.
