I confess, I didn't start out ordering this bass. I had made a lucid and conscious decision to order a left handed bass from a certain very old US company that usually offers nothing for lefties and are not particularly known for their basses in the first place. I ordered this semi hollow new model sight unseen in December (2012) and waited and waited and waited. I thought it might be fun to have something completely different from my arsenal of Music Man bases.

This particular manufacturer actually refuses to provide either the customer or the distributor any sort of ETA for any instrument ordered and after six months had gone by, I agreed to accept one in an alternate color, simply because it was the only lefty that was likely to show up and was sitting in the retail store's warehouse. So a few weeks later it arrives and was a complete and total disappointment in every way. The finish was not buffed, there were bare spots where the finish was actually missing on the back and side of the neck and they had actually installed a strap pin on the opposing horn, filled the hole and glossed over it with nitro. It wasn't grounded, had a bad hum, and just looked like it had been put together by someone who could care less.

I took the bass home but knew before I even left the store that there was no way I was keeping this substandard machine. Brought her back the next day and the sales staff laughed out loud at how many problems the bass had. They confirmed it would not be re sold and was going back to the manufacturer.

Because this is a large music store chain, I asked on a whim (as I often do) if they had any MM lefty basses in the system. They had one. She arrived today and I cannot express how perfect and simply exquisite this bass is. Funny thing is, I had no doubt that it would be a keeper and I am just delighted. Here are some pics I took as soon as I got her home:

It funny how things work out. Been playing her all evening and could not be happier. Despite having three five string single H EBMM's in similar colors, they each have their own vibe. The Trans Orange has the ceramic pup and is more aggressive in the mid snarl (Think Sterling), The new SR5 has the alnico pup and has more thump and a bit more roundness to the tone (Think SR4), and the Bongo with the neo pickup and 18v preamp has pretty much more of everything. The Bongo has the most killer low B of them all and the most insane playability due to the 24 frets.

Thanks guys. A buddy asked me if I had "buyers remorse" today. I told him that was about the farthest thing from my mind. I could not be happier with this bass.

The only dilemma I have now is that I have the chance to pick up a Vintage Cream Pearl lefty pick guard that will fit this bass perfectly. Its sitting at my local store. They special ordered it from EBMM awhile back and it will only fit the newer SR5 basses with the alnico pickup. What do you think, stick with the Torte or go for the Cream? :)

Trans Gold with a maple fretboard is my favorite! My Sterling 4 HS is that combination, and the love for that look just gets better with the years.

I would recommend you take your bass to the store and hold the pickguard up to it to get an idea of what it would look like on there. My Trans Gold Sterling has the white pickguard that was original with it, and I love it.

Nice bass you have there!

I think I will have to buy this pick guard just to have it as lefty OEM accessories are pretty rare. I will post some pics once I have the nerve to switch pick guards. I hate messing with anything on such a perfect brand new bass. :)

Here she is with the new pick guard. The bass sure looks different with and without the sun shining. I like the look of both guards but think the edge goes to the vintage cream pearl:

Love to hear your preferences.
