Newbee bought old Sabre Bass

Hi, i am a german drummer and bass lover and i bought a Sabre Bass and the owner said it is from 1978 and one of the first Sabre bass guitars in germany or even europe. The serial #is C004529 and i did not find it in the other vintage list. So could you please tell me how to find out if that is right... And if someone knows how to find out the history of such instruments please let me know.

Hi Fibbo. Welcome to the forums.

If you post this in the "Music Man Serial Number Database" forum (it's a stickie on the main forums page) someone from Customer Service will look up the serial number and tell you everything you want to know about your Sabre.

Very cool bass by the way. I love the Pre-Ernie Ball Sabres (which I guess is an oxymoron since there are no post EBMM Sabre's, at least that I'm aware of. Maybe if we bug Big Pappa enough....).

The list isn't made up of information from the old factory because there was no information saved. The people who now own the instruments have to contribute the information, that is why instruments aren't listed there.
So with your serial number, you should remove the neck and look for the date stamps in the neck pocket and neck. Then email all your information (serial, dates, finish, fretboard) to Home - Musicmanbass.org, Music Man, Musicman, Music Man Bass, Musicman Bass, Music Man Guitar and Gavin will post it on there.

The following is based on knowledge of Leo-era G&L Guitars. This may or may not include information accurate for CLF Research, which was - for all intents and purposes - pre Ernie Ball MusicMan

Actually, there were production logs. However:

1) There were written on notebook paper. You know. Like in a 3-ring binder you used in school.

2) If CLF Research production logs for MusicMan still exist, they could well be in the possession of Dale Hyatt, who took the old logs with him when he left G&L around the time of Leo's passing.

3) Last I checked, Mr. Hyatt will gaze into the logs and write you a nice letter regarding your instrument. It will not be free.

Here's a workaround:

Pull the neck. There will likely be a date stamped or written on the neck heel and/or in the neck pocket. Kind of like this:

Failing a more accurate read of the logs, this will get you pretty close to the actual date of birth.
