amps

Ditto in regards to Spector's comment. The 400+ is a beast of an amp. Just that the beast that needs to be taken care of because it's sensitive and needs attention and to be told that it looks pretty and isn't fat...

Er...depends on what type of sound you're looking for? Seems like the things people are suggesting are items they currently own/ or have G.A.S. for :p

Um, yeah.

But I guess that's the point. Jubjub was asking for recommendations for an amp...

You tend to recommend the gear you like, which often coincides with the stuff you want to buy yourself :)

The Ashdown is the amp, so far, that I've enjoyed using most. Excellent versatility... plenty of clean headroom, loads of grunt if you want it, easy to use.

Jub,

As I said to you before, I have just bought the GK 400RB Mark IV which is just under 300watts at 4ohms. I am only running it at 8ohms by running it through a 2x10 GK RBS Cab as we have a big PA with powered bass bins.

So if you are thinking of the 700RB, plus a couple of GK cabs, then whilst everyone has a different opinion to offer and are giving good advice, I don't think you will do yourself (or your dad's wallet!) an injustice by buying GK if that is what your gut instinct is telling you.

Finally, as we said with the choice of bass, get out there and try them all, but you won't really know if you have bought the right one until you have had it a couple of months.

Good luck.

Actually Jub,

Thinking about it, everyone has been saying what great sounds their amps have, but no one appears to be mentioning anything about size, weight, portability etc.

A major factor in my considerations were also price (I am a 36 year old man with 4 women to spend my monthly wage!) and portability due to the amount of band PA I have to get into a small estate car.

The 400RB GK is only 15lbs in weight and is roughly the same size as a modern video recorder - if not actually a bit smaller. I don't imagine the 700RB weighs in much different.

After hauling my Trace combo up the stairs at the weekend (86lb) by myself, I'd agree... think about this! The biggest problem I have with my amp is storage... think about where you're going to put it.

As much as I've enjoyed the sound I get through an 8x10 Ampeg cab, it's never going to be high on my to-buy list.
