Hey all, very new to the forums (first post) and I'm hoping someone can help me answer a few questions about a recent acquisition.

I owned a JP6 a few years ago and considered it at the time the finest guitar I had ever touched. Ended up parting with it after a life changing break up and have been mostly content to gaze longingly at the EBMM website from time to time.

Fast forward a few years and I decided to part with a few Gibsons I had acquired to get some new gear for a current project. A few weeks ago I walked into GC and found a SM Y2D in th used section in near mint condition. Traded in a LP I had purchased for a steal and walked out with it for a total cost of $1250. (Trade converted all of it with some left over)

Really fell in love with the pickup layout and the location of the volume knob for pinky swells. Started perusing the GC website and one day a SM Dark Lord popped up in the used section for $1500. I called the store, got confirmation that it was in excellent condition, and with a chunk of my tax return burning a hole in my bank account I pulled the trigger on it. Ended up at $1600 after tax and shipping.

It arrived today, fantastic condition, hang tags still in the case. This particular guitar says Limited Edition on the neck plate and it has the BFR logo at the 12th fret. It did not come with a COA and there was no signed backplate. I've read that units with the BFR logo are from the original 70, but I honestly have no clue. Can anyone clear up if my guitar should have originally shipped with a COA and its just lost?

I'll post pics tomorrow when I take them, I know an NGD thread isn't actually real without pics.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Wolfie,

As I understand it...

The original run of 70 all had signed back plates and COAs and were configured with reverse head stocks and BFR inlays - these were made in May/June 2012.

Somewhat after that (six months?) this became a regular production model with reverse head stocks and BFR inlays - but no signed backplate and no COA.

Somewhat after that, the reverse headstock and BFR inlay weren't available and this is really no longer refereed to as a "Dark Lord", but just a "black transparent" Morse Y2D.

Sounds to me like you have a "second run", but hit the sticky thread above and post your serial number - the manufacture date will be the clue you need.

And welcome to the forum! :)

This is not accurate. They did a second limited run of 70 (+/-) without the signature.
I believe partway through that run is when the stopped using the 12th fret "BFR" inlays.
Search 'Dark Lord' on this forum and you'll find all kinds of info from a few years ago...

Gotcha that this was a second limited run - thanks for the correction! :)

^ Should have to forfeit one of your morse's (the true gold copy)

Some guys never give up! :)

We're all good - I didn't take it as "nasty" (I'm an easy going guy :) ) and I'd rather the correct info be stated than any mis-statement I might make - appreciate you jumping in with clarification.

is the neck on the Dark Lord fatter than a Y2D ?

Yup - just a little - anybody want dimensions?

Thanks so much to everyone that replied, you guys sure know how to make a stranger feel welcome!

Reflex arrives on Tuesday. In the meantime, finding bliss playing this amazing instrument. This thing is a true LP killer. Utterly astounding.
