Hi guys - recent lurker, now new member.
I'd heard about EBMM guitars for a couple years, but had never seen one, much less played one. After hunting around and biding my time, I came across two separate deals. One for a 20th Silo, and one for an Axis SS. I was only intending to buy one, but I'm kind of a knucklehead sometimes...
The 20th Silo I'd made an offer on, and then not heard anything for a couple days. Figuring that deal was likely dead, I found the SS used on a major retailer's site. The very next day my Silo offer was accepted and ... well, I now have two EBMMs.
At first glance, the Axis was a huge disappointment. The case latches were broken, and the guitar looked like it was bathed in sweat for a few years, buried for a decade or so in a shallow grave, then exhumed and shipped to me. It was just utterly gross. I almost didn't even take it home from the store.
Undeterred but gritting my teeth, I hit it with some steel wool, some wipes and some polish before restringing and adjusting the neck. It rapidly came back into playable condition and I spent a couple hours with it, still unsure if it would be going back. The famed neck seemed *ok* but nothing spectacular. The oil+wax finish is very nice though.
A couple days later the Silo arrives. Although this was a private sale, it was also kinda sweat covered, though only needed a quick wipe and new strings. (Why do people sell and ship guitars that are so dirty?!) I spent a couple hours with it and happily decided it was gonna join the herd. Just pleased about it all around.
For days I'd glance at the Axis and its dilapidated case and just sit with my ambivalence. For some reason I didn't even want to take it out of the case.
After about a week I pulled it out again, and tuned it up. Then I fell in love. What the ...? How is this the same guitar? The action is amazing, the neck feels completely natural and easy, and the TONE. OMFG the tone of this thing is staggering. I've been playing it like crazy ever since...
The Axis still has problems though. Most minor, one possibly big. The tone knob is stripped, and the pickups don't adjust up/down. These things should be easily fixed. However...the B on the third string, fourth fret is a dead spot. The guitar just loses sustain on that one spot. Notes struck there sustain about 2/3 or maybe 3/4 of elsewhere on the guitar, and are exacerbated if the volume is turned down. It's weird - anybody experience something like this? I'm wondering if there's a sympathetic vibration somewhere that's dampening it.
That aside, this guitar is just flat-out awesome. I'm really glad I picked it up, and I got it for a real pittance.
I have a weird situation and questions with the Silo that I'll write up in another thread asking for advice.
Anyhow thanks for reading. Just wanted to introduce myself and my little odyssey! Glad I finally made it to the party.
