It looks like a regular finish to me but that isn't what you'd call "great photography" by any means.

Can you link up the CL ad?

I don't even know if there was a nitro finish in the late 70ies. The Bass in the picture must be made after 1992 because of the bridge and even later because of the compensated nut and the case. I say no nitro on this, or the last owner did it himself....

There has never been any Musicman with nitrocellulose laquer, and the bass in the pic looks just like a normal production bass.

I agree there haven't been EBMM basses in nitro - however I'm convinced my pre-EB sunburst 79/80 had a nitrocellulose finish based on the finish wear after only five/six years of use when I sold it (things we come to regret eh :() - the sunburst had worn through on the slab top where the cutaway is on EB Rays, and in various other contact points. The shine also dulled down on it after a while.

I bought it brand new and although it did a lot of gigs I've never seen an EB finish bass wear in that way!

Back to the thread - the pic looks like a stock EB Ray - maybe black sparkle??

It's hard to tell from the pic, but it almost looks like the same finish as the stealth Bongo.

Only the very early Pre-EB Rays were finished with Nitro. I think it was Polyeurothane by 1979.

Judging from the new style bridge, it must be later than 1996. The pic quality is rather bad, but to me it looks as if it has the new compensated nut and the newer rounded pole pieces. So it must be quite new (2005 or newer). Regarding the finish, it could be Graphite Pearl or Sapphire Black. Those can look matte under certain lightning conditions.
