I received my Sterling SUB Ray 4 today and it worked fine for about 10 minutes and then the sound just stopped working. I figured the battery just died so i bought a new one but it still does not work.
There is some sound produced when i fret the E string really hard but the signal is weak and cuts out rather quickly. This even works when i take out the battery completely.

-Nothing wrong with the cable or preamp, my strat works fine using it.

Is the battery pushed in properly?
Try tapping the back of the cover. My old sub5 used to suffer with this occasionaly.

The battery looks to be pushed in properly
Wiggling the battery around does not seem to help.

Check to make sure the terminals in the battery box haven't gotten pressed down too far, or that a wire hasn't broken loose from the solder on one of the terminals and is shorting across the positive and negative. The battery getting hot sounds like contact is being made across the two terminals somewhere, perhaps.

If that's the case i don't have the tools nor the experience to fix it. I'm gonna let the store handle it since i just bought it

Is the cable pushed in all the way. The foreign subs I have owned have some stiff jacks.

I'm suspecting a faulty jack. It's also the power switch,
so it's direct to the battery, and if it shorts across the
ground sleeve of the cable plug, yeah, hot battery. A
strat is passive so just in case it's inside the cord, and
not in the jack, try another cord. A strat would not be
an equal substitute for a problem with an active ax.

Really, on a brand new ax, with a cooperative retailer,
better to dump it on them. A sooper cooperative shop
would just exchange it, if they have a replacement in
their inventory. Presuming you are within their allowed
period to simply return merchandise, they would prefer
handing you replacement vs losing a sale by you just
returning it for refund.

If they care nothing for customer relations and just tell
you to ship it yourself to the warrantee service [some
shops treat you that way if they offered an enhanced
warrantee that you refused] do not pay $50 +/- to ship
a heavy ax for a small electrical problem. A local repair
at your own expense is cheaper and if it's a jack or pot
or such, they will put in a better one then original build.
Plus, you will have made an important connection [no
pun intended, but I do like it].

Is it possible to hold the battery against the wires on the back of the battery box to see if it works that way? or is that dangerous?

If you can't readily whip up a pair of mini jumper
cables [2 pieces of wire and 4 alligator clips] then
it seems reasonable to try your idea. But, I think
you'll find it takes three, maybe four, hands. Call
in a friend with small strong fingers.
