I am a tech and a customer has a noise in his pre-EB 1979 saber. Just want to get some preliminary info until he brings the bass in.

What pickups and preamp system are in these? Anyone know of a schematic?

The noise is just with one pickup, and other techs have tried to fix it as if it was a ground issue. Get louder with proximity to amps and under various different lighting conditions. Anyone have similar issues?

thanks

Not to sound rude but man That bass will be a bitch to get it noise free, it's just a trial and error, Good Luck cause in most cases you'll need it.

You might dig around in here for info.

FWIW, if the bass is 2H and you're picking up non-hum noise on one pickup, you might start by checking for an open coil on the pickup.

Good luck!

That's very helpful Ken - thanks.

I was thinking the exact same thing, one of the coils open. At first I thought no, cause they are probably in series - but your link shows otherwires - that's probably the issue.

Hey gang, it was the bridge pickup. Pulled it measure it at 4.2k Measured the neck at 1.8k. Checked each coil on the pickup and found the dead one.

Wire is way too fine for my fat fingers. So either I send it to a local pickup winder or get a new one.

Who sells new pups for these basses?

thanks

You will have to get the old pickup rewound. Replacements do not exist for the Sabre Bass, and these pickups on the used market are harder to find than hen's teeth.
