Hey there...

Saw this link via vhlinks.com, and thought I'd pass it along. From the sound clips, it NAILS the "brown sound".

http://www.mojaveampworks.com/1Amplifiers/PeaceMaker/PeaceMaker.asp

I just wonder how well the 5150 head would sound through one of those 2x12's. This fat out of shape man here can't go draggin' round a 4x12 forever...then again, I could use the exercise after all...never mind. :p

That sounds really nice. It's rare that I hear sound clips on the net and think the tone is anything great, or at least better than anything else. I liked how that sounded though. I didn't see how much the Peacemaker was going for.

I'll also be interested to hear more hands on reviews of the PV JSX that is starting to ship.

I just looked at their site, and holy crap! MSRP $2750...

...maybe you should look at other options first. ;)

Dayyyaam!!!!!

The 5150 totally sounds like ass compared to that - that's WAAAAAY more "brown sound" and early-VH-toned than anything EVH himself has played/"created"/developed/taken credit for in years.

Wonder if he's gonna switch to these when his Peavey deal is up? :p

...now, are you saying that my amp sounds like ass, PS? ;)

Early VH tones, and so on, yeah, you can nail it with this pup (and think about it, for that price, YOU should get nailed too! LOL!). However, don't write off the 5150...I think it's a good amp, sans good clean though. :( You just have to do a little more dialing in, though. I like it, dammit! :)

*muttering under breath*...my amp sounds like ass...some people. :p

Heh heh.....no Darrell....just speaking in relative terms here, your amp's just fine. :D

The 5150 is a great rock amp, but as I've mentioned in past posts IMHO it's such a drastic middy departure from EVH's rippin' early tones - even when he's playing it - that it's never completely struck my ears as being "the" sound and spirit of it's maker. It's like Ed decided that his original amp had given up the ghost and nobody could reproduce the tone, so he just went the other way and made a commercialized version of his "other" amp at the time, a Soldano - another amp that's not bad for what it does, but still has aspects that don't fully light my fire compared to others.

Based on those clips, that Mojave is probably the closest thing I've heard to sounding like the real deal classic EVH sound so far, bar none. It's so close that it makes the 5150 just sound that much farther away, catch my drift?

Again, not knockin' the 5150...I've not owned one, but the models of it in my Boss GT-6 sound pretty good with my EB's. But now I'm wondering if the Mojave's magic would too...

Lew,

you must be in the UK too if you are looking at Cornfords...not too many make it across the pond to the USA. I've had a Hurricane for about 6 months now and its the most amazing tone machine ever. Sure it lacks stacks of switches, channels and knobs since its based on hand wired vintage amp construction but there is no bad sound in that amp whatever the settings you choose and its definately loud enough for pub gigs too. Works a treat with my Axis.

If Heavy Metal's your game you'll need a distortion box though as it does clean to rock but not beyond, even at 11!!

I know what everyone is saying about the 5150. I passed up the chance to buy one even though I'm an "Ed Head" because it didnt' seem like the amp for me. I've heard some real nice clips of the 5150 though and they sounded a lot like the early stuff.

IMO the trick with the 5150 in genral is to not turn the gain up very high. We're all use to turning the pre past at least 12:00 on any amp we use when it comes to playig rock. But with the 5150 I think you can get by with much less than that and achieve better results and reduce the buzzzzzzzzzz.

Technique never hurts either. ;)

I consder EVH's tones on VH3 to be some of the worst I've heard him record. It typified what is bad about the 5150 to me. On the same token, some of the best tones he's recorded were the on the Balance c.d. and clearly that was a 5150. Those weren't fuzzy, they were just smokin'. It must have been the difference between the EBMM/EVH and the Wolf huh? :D

Thanks for that Steve,i will definetley want some dirt but a good clean is just as important.Does it react well to pedals?say a TS to push it over.
Whats the Reverb like?
I think the closest place for me to try one is in vintage and rare in bath. They would take my SFVR up against it as trade as wel.

Cheers!

Lew,

you have to try a Hurricane out. The overall sound from the amp is extremely warm and dark (think highest quality chocolate!!! ;) ). In my opinion the clean is one of the nicest I have found...I play Lenny by SRV through it and the tone is just beautiful. Also I love the reverb, it's rich and very controllable.

On the dirt side you will easily get up to a nice AC/DC level hard rock sound. If you have the Stereophonics album JEEP, track 1 "Vegas Two Times" is pretty much what I get when I use an Axis with the bridge PU and the Cornfords Gain on 8...which should be plenty! Again the distortion tones are very dark and warm...if you are used to Marshalls or Boogies it will come as a shock but you'll never want to go back to that gear again!!

For leads or for pushing my single coiled F (cough) 'nder I use a Boss DS-1 to give it a little extra poke! But remember, like all tube amps, if you have the preamp gain at close to max, a nice hot pickup in your guitar and then stomp on a drive pedal there won't be a big change in volume (as the preamp stage is already saturated) but it will give you the chance to shift the EQ tone and add just enough gain to allow you to cut through and scream!!! Plus its a great way of adding rock god feedback if you want to go there!!!

Personally the only downside to the Hurricane if compared to other modern amps is the lack of channel switching...however I went from a 3 channel Marshall with loads of knobs and switches, now I have one channel, 6 knobs and have never regretted it. I have never found a bad sound in the Cornford...and normally us musos have to look for the good sounds!! :D

Good luck and test one out soon!!!!
