None of you know this, but aside from playing guitar, I also dabble on the piano/keyboard as well. It was what I started with previous to picking up the guitar 2 years down the road, etc.

The keyboardist in a project I'm starting up, who is also my best friend since 12 years old (I started this instrument because of him!) gets help from me in regards to keyboard and synth related items, and both of us are slowly leading our way into the computer based-applications for sound generation, etc.

Found an awesome program from a company called Native Instruments called Reaktor, a software-based synthesizer. It's more dance/techno type sounds, etc. -- however, rules were meant to be broken when it comes to music, right?

So, after a little tweaking here and there, trial and error, as well as learning the song as I recorded (LOL), I put together a nifty little version of a song that my man EVH does at the start of the 1984 album. Would like to share with you guys my rendition, which I have dubbed "1984 in 2004".

2 things...first, it's not perfect, but sounds close enough to be pleasing. Second, I mixed it down and exported to mp3 via Cakewalk, which was the inaugural run with that process for yours truly, so get off my back.

Very cool - sounds realy good. More guitar related, I've been checking out their Guitar Rig sofware demo (mac or win) - very, very nice - you can mix multiple amps, cabinets, effects, etc - sweet. It also plugs into GarageBand really nicely. When you buy the solution, it comes with a foot controller as well.

Reaktor usually costs a pretty penny...I have a bunch of soft synths I need to install again on my comp (everything came off in the great purge).

I don't really like the way G-Rig sounds. Seem like L6 cornered that market. To me the Pods just sound better, tho I've heard a guy use the speaker sims only in g-rig w/ decent results. The dirty sounds are just awful to my ears.

I always dug EVH's keyboard sounds. Those Oberheims were just so fat and warm, and the closest I've heard to that piece sounding like the record was a guy in my college dorm using a Roland Juno 106...this is easily the next best rendition I've heard. Speaking of great VH keyboard sounds, I personally have been trying to get a sound like "Sunday Afternoon in the Park/One Foot Out The Door" from Fair Warning myself - quite unsuccessfully, I might add!

Having said that, I'm actually not a keyboard player but I futz around with 'em in stores occasionally and have been playing with softsynths for years...that NI stuff is really cool. FYI, they have a free standalone synth on their website called Soundforum. Very rudimentary, but based off the Reaktor engine and very usable. Just got an introductory verison of Propellerheads Reason with my new M-Audio FireWire 410 that's pretty bitchin' too.

Since you're a guitarist dabbling in keyboard type, you might find this very interesting - it's basically THE tool that bridges the gap between synths and guitars (have you heard about it?):
