Since they were made in the same factory as the regular Stingrays, the quality is the same. The only shortcuts taken with the SUBs were in finish...slab bodies, textured body finish, painted necks, etc.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

The SUB was made in the same factory as the StingRays and all the other stuff, so the build quailty is the same, top notch. The electronics are the same (unless you count the 3 band EQ, SUBS come with 2 band EQ or passive electronics)

The body wood is poplar, wheras StinGrays usually have Ash or Alder. The finish is a textured paint finish instead of the usual high gloss of the Rays. It has a painted neck, and has not contours in the body.

It is merely these features which make it different to an actual StingRay, the quality and sound are the same. The playability is the same. It's a StingRay, pretty much.

Although, if you can find a StingRay for a good price, go for it!

EDIT: Darn, beaten to it!

Please take a look at the Sterling by Musicman Ray34. All the looks and all the tone. Shipped over from Indonesia though. Inspect before you buy...

The Sterling by Musicman are excellent instruments. Tried a Ray34 and it rocked!!! I believe that the parts are made in Indonesia but final assembly or maybe it is setup / inspection is done in SLO USA.

As far as the SUB is concerned. Even with the Stingray, Bongo and 25th that I have, if I had the chance and cash to get a SUB I would get it. I tried one and found that it had a nice 'Old School' Fat sound to die for. I should have gotten it; when I went back for it, it was sold!!!:(

Good luck :)

Both of my subs were great but I love the 3 band and the body contours of my stingray. Necks are pretty much the same. The subs being american made puts them above the sterlings in my book.

The SUB has '2EQ' which means active controls for bass and treble frequencies. Rays come with that or '3EQ' which has bass, mid and treble frequency boost and cut. The Bongo (on dual pickup models), Big Al and 25th come with 4EQ which consists of controls for Bass, Low Mid, High Mid, and Treble.

The 2 band EQ on the SUB is highly regarded as a very good sounding preamp, with many people preferring it over the 3 band EQ.
