Hey ppl,

I've been lurking for a few days trying to find info on some pics of Big Als that appear to have a lacquered neck. I say "appear" because I'm not sure that is in fact the case and I'm just seeing things.

Can anyone confirm that some of the Big Als came with a lacquer (or whatever finish was used) neck? (And can they be ordered this way?)

Thnx

Nope... the Stingray, Sterling, and Reflex come with a hand waxed neck. Only the Bongo comes with a painted neck. And because there is an exception to every rule, the Roasted Neck special editions also do have a painted neck.

Currently you cannot order one with a painted neck (unless it's a Bongo :) )

I have a lacquered neck on my Big Al 5-H, but I had it finished that way after it left the factory by my luthier. Standard neck finish on a BA is satin.

My BA5-H has to be one of if not the only BA5-H around with a custom non factory lacquered finished neck and headstock. The Roasted Maple Necks are amazing. I hope they become available again very soon.

I think the OP is thinking of roasted maple necks. The Big Als do come in that option, here's one thread with pics:

Welcome to the Forum!

If LawDaddy is correct, and it is the roasted neck that has caught your eye, all I can say is: Please, do yourself a favor and buy one.
I have a roasted maple neck on my 2011 Black Sugar Axis, and I have never loved a neck as much in my life.

I understand that you are looking at a bass, and I have a guitar, but it is the roasted finish that I am raving about.
I will never tire of recommending these necks to people.

what you are looking at is roasted maple. A limited option release from 2010. One may pop up used every once in a while, but i don't know how many big als are out there with this option. I'm very glad to have mine, but it rarely gets played. As far as i know, they were only ever released in "Black Sugar" a very pretty, but very subtle black sparkle. And black guitars really just aren't my thing...

There were probably no Big Al 4 or 5-H 's ordered with the Roasted Maple Neck option. It's just not as popular configuration on this bass as the SSS version which we all know were ordered with the RMN option. Only the factory knows how many were made.

I sure hope they offer the RMN option again, next time I won't miss the ordering window.

I have a roasted Big Al 4H, so they are out there. You can't have mine though.

EDIT: Just noticed that the link in post #3 was to the thread I started when I got mine. It now wears a different pickguard (tiramisu a/k/a orange swirl) but the roasted neck is still awesome.

Well mr Sanders... I have 4 big Als and tonally the roasted doesn't sound any better overdriven through an amplifier, than the Dargie Green one does.
It was suggested to me some time ago, that you buy your first guitar because of what it looks like. Your second guitar guitar because of how it feels, and your third guitar because of how it plays.. Thinking that if you like how it plays you can change the other two options easier than the sound.

Most of us bought our roasted maples without ever having the opportunity to touch one, and it's a crazy cool axe, but it's not a whole lot different than the alien glow of the DD2.
I have enough guitars, I can decide if I want to play a black one or not...
Not meant to be mean, but given the choice, I'm going green, or purple, or glitter white.

Black isn't my thing, either, but I have a Sapphire Black Bongo. Go figure.

Also, you need to consider finding a new barber.

I love black basses. The black sugar from my BFR Roasted Neck is also one that I love. I eventually want to get a Big Al but because I have a few black basses, I probably won't go that route unless it is also a BFR Roasted Neck. But I do know that I want to go with the SSS pickup configuration over the single H simply because it is the only EBMM bass model with that pickup option available.
