noobie spec question

Hi all,
Im a recent discoverer of EBMM guitars, I bought a Sub 1 HH recently and never have I bonded more or as quickly to an instrument as I have this one, im flat out amazed at the quality and the playability of the thing (not keen on that metal pickguard but i'll try and find another to fit), anyways its got me thinking if this guitar is that good and its a budget model to my understanding, then how great must the real thing be, so I've looked and all the specs i can find but I cant see anywhere mention the neck profile (i.e C or D ala fender) so would a silhouette's neck be identical to my Sub 1 as all the other specs like nut width etc are a match?

Im really hoping so,if so I intend to sell off all my Fenders and PRS to pay for one (as they aint cheap)

Hi and welcome!

The SUB 1 neck is virtually identical to the Silhouette Special neck - same nut width, same shape, etc. The Silhouette has a 24-fret neck but it is also the same shape, nut width, etc. One thing to point out - while all 3 necks are 1 5/8" wide at the nut the SUB 1 and Silhouette Special are 2 1/4" wide at the heel, which is just below the 22nd fret; the Silhouette is also 2 1/4" wide at the heel, but on it that just below the 24th fret.

Welcome. I'm relatively new here but you're singing my song. I bought a Sub 1, I fell in love with it so much that my PRS did nothing more than hang on the wall. I kept waiting for the honeymoon to end and for me to say "well the Sub 1 is nice but my PRS is..." well it never happened.

Then I played an Axis. It's over. I just sold the PRS a couple days ago and I'll have an Axis by next week (assuming I can find one that I want).

EBMM guitars are wonderful and I have enjoyed all of the ones I have played thus far.

Check Chandler Guitars (Pickguard Heaven: Pickguards for Every Guitar) for a place to buy a different pick guard for your Sub 1. I ordered one a few weeks ago...

I'll get that pickguard ordered asap (incidentialy what colour did you go for?).
So the silhouette is 24 fret hsh and the silhouette special is 22 fret ssh? can I get the special in hsh in not sure i have the need for 24 frets

If you haven't, have a look at the link of my Sub1 in my signature. It's cinnamon and when I bought it, it only had the bridge humbucker. As I'm not one to leave stuff alone and like to solder up all kinds of tone options (see the Ibanez pic for switch hell) I wanted to install and wire up the neck pup. To boot, I also am not the biggest fan of the aluminum pick guard. Anyway, I had a decently long talk with the folks at Chandler and ended up going with abalone. They are going to select a piece that has a fair amount of green and brown in it as those are (IMO) the predominant colors in my guitar.

I'm hoping the pick guard will be here next week or soon thereafter. After it arrives I'll make a post of new pics and show the changes I have made to it (will be at least 2, if not 3 switches in it, the stock bridge pup and the neck pickup I have purchased for it).

Nice,i'll keep my eye out, mines in black and due to a hideous fixation with retro looking guitars and odd colour mixes im thinking either the 3ply brown/cream/brown they have or maybe a red tort ? Im in the Uk so will have to price up their guards inc shipping.

Subs Silhouettes and Morses are a C shape. Lukes are a very comfortable V. Axis have an asymmetrical design(slightly fatter on the bass side than the treble side). JP's are a modern D(Shred neck).

The Sub neck shape is just perfect imo, but just wait to you try one with the oil and wax finish. I love them all so far.

Also of note are the different radius and fret sizes.

What happens when you go overboard with a sub project. I'm going to be simplifying this and either going HSS or to Chandler for a simple HH pickguard next.

This thread has read my mind. Bought my Sub1 a few months back and everything else has been sitting. While I'll never part with my '77 LP Goldtop, my Custom 24 PRS is sitting around not getting played. I'm thinking I want to try an Axis with a standard trem (no Floyd for me).

Before selling my PRS to fund an Axis, I was thinking of getting an OLP MM1 to see if the feel suits me. Anyone know if the specs are the same as the ASS?

grungebob - no, the Silo Special is available only in HSS or SSS; I believe the factory routing is HSS under the hood of all of them (I haven't pulled the pickguard on my SSS to check).

You are correct that the Silo is HSH only; they used to have a swimming pool (or universal) route, but now I believe it is an HHH route. It would be easier to take a Silo and make it HSS or SSS with a new pickguard than to make a Silo Special HSH since you would have to route the body for the neck humbucker.

Congrats on your Sub 1 acquisition. They are great guitars, and are real deal Music Man guitars. Althought the Sub 1 has a neck profile exactly like the Silhouette Special, they are not like the Silhouette which has a compound profile.
AFAIK the Sub 1 and Silo Spec have a symetrical C shaped profile that varies in thickness over the length of the neck. The Silo is asymetrical.

I don't particularly care for the aluminum layered pickguards either. Two of my Sub 1s are converted into Silhouette Special configuration, easy to do. Take a look in my album if you'd like to see them.
