I'm left-handed, but started out playing a rightie bass and I've been playing for 4 years, so I thought my right hand would be as fast as my left by now...it's not. I flipped the bass over today and discovered that my left hand can still pluck and slap about 3x faster than my right. Crud, time to practice some more...

I'd say the biggest perk is that if your guitar player is a rightie, you get a nice symmetrical effect going when you gig...both headstocks pointing in opposite directions out...or pincering toward the drummer's head, depending on how you stand.

Nyuks here as well. I've never tried a lefty ax. When my bro' first taught me,
he asked if I wanted to play normal, flipped over to lefty, or flipped over with
restringing. Playing an actual lefty ax was not even considered. Reason one
was part of Lesson one. Lesson One was "go buy a $50 bass, and don't pay
over $5 for a strap for it." Lesson Two was "tell me how you want to hold it,
so I can teach you how to play it".

As a lefty, I chose "normal" playing position because as far as I could tell by
holding it and trying the various options, a normal bass in normal position is
really a left-handed device. All you righty bass players probably had no idea
just how ambidexterous you really are!

Some day just cuz I'm a twisty sicko lefty, I may actually buy a suitable lefty
bass just to play it flipped over and restrung to righty. I'm thinking "maybe a
Thunderbird". That would re-un-reverse it so this whole idea would be double
sicko. I've never seen a lefty T'bird. Guess I'll have to apply for a grant from
the DSLAF [Double Sicko Lefty Artists Foundation] to get one custom built.
