Nothing Beats The Real Deal

I saw a thread that posed the old question (in not so many words): What should I buy if i'm not going to pay for the BALLS...

First off... I am a proud owner of a savage OLP... who is fortunate... I've played several OLP's at GC and i ordered mine from a web based source and got a great product; however, those that were played at GC were not that great.

If you're looking at an AXIS go for it... treat yourself to the finest instrument you will ever buy... don't waste your time buying a knock off... trust me on this one...

At first, i bought a OLP... played very well.. but i did some mods to it.. i installed an original floyd on it.. sanded the neck and OIL/WAXed.. + replaced the pickups with dimarzio's air norton and tone zone.... that made it a lot better...


BUT.... i wanted the real thing, so i got a EBMM EVH my First ball.......... and now got another one on its way!

My OLP os fairly sweet...
It's got Schallers and Perloid Tuning heads and it's been really tweaked to play well. I've had to refinish the neck with some help from Pete and Norm...
It's taken a lot of time to get it where it plays really well... I can dive and pull and it gets back to zero just about every time.

If I count up the hours and frustration it would have been less expensive to buy the real deal.

Don't get me wrong... the OLP is a great product... but you can't say it's just as nice or plays just as well as the EBMM...

Bottom Line...
A Porsche is a Porshe and no matter how much you trick out a Volkswagon it's never going to be a Porsche... so the same is said for an OLP no matter how much you tweak and mod it's never going to be the covited EBMM!

I have looking for OLP Silo Special, or MM4 I think is the model. But once you play the real thing it is real hard to go anyother way.

My oldest friend and band mate since 13 has sent his son out to visit for a few weeks, getting him clean of back-riding-monkeys. Talented kid, this lad. He’s been playing both of my SS’s, and though he’s never heard of EBMM before, he’s completely blown away by mine. Now he’s eye-balling an OLP MM4 for himself, while I keep steering him toward saving his coin and getting the real deal. He’s got good taste, so maybe he’ll listen to my advise.

I’m not a collector, just an old hacker. I sent my first MM in on warranty, to repair a glitch, and wanted a back-up axe. I almost pulled the trigger on an OLP to play while my baby was away, but my friendly MM CS rep convinced me to get another real Ball. I’m now indebted to him for steering me in that direction.

If it looks (almost) like a duck, doesn’t mean it quacks like one. Immediate gratification rarely lasts very long. Better to wait, save if necessary, and get real Balls.

Yeah-
I think for young bucks OLPS are great guitars... if they are set up correctly they will feed the desire to get the real deal. As I said it took a lot of time to get my OLP to the point where i could really rely on it as a Main guitar. I have several classic pieces in my collection and the OLP just looked so cool and i got it more or less to mess around with but it turned out to be quite the guitar... and it became my main AXE once I got it dialed in. I can only imagine what it will be like to own the real deal one day.

I wasn't lucky enough to get a Les Paul for my first guitar - I got a Watkins Rapier 44 (at the time a cheap budget guitar) as my first electric guitar, then I got an SG (wish I never got rid of it!) then the Les Paul etc etc.

What I'm trying to say here is if you are starting off and have to get a budget guitar you will not go wrong getting an OLP. My mate has a trans black Axis OLP and its great (for the money!)
