Hi, I'm new to playing a Stingray 5 HS and notice that on the D & G strings I get very high treble sound, is this normal for this bass. All tone knots are flat. I been playing bass for over 40 years and never had a bass with that much treble tone. Replace battery and put new EB strings on it. Any help is welcome.

What type of amp and speaker cabinet are you using? I turn the horn attenuator way down on my ampeg when I am playing rock a billy cause my ray can be bright. I also turn up the lows on my bass.

My Stingray 5 single H was made in Dec 06 so It has the ceramic pickups, which I think are alot brighter than the alnicos I've had in my Stingray 4

So, I do have to adjust the treble and high settings on my amp to compensate for that.

But also the room you are playing in has alot to do with it. I was playing at this other church on Saturday night and my sound was VERY trebley, so I had to adjust my settings .... But then next morning, I was at my home church, and I sounded dull, and had to turn the treble back up some.... So theres many factors in what could be causing your high treble issue.

Firstly, hi and welcome to the forum. Secondly, if you've been playing passive basses for 40 years the "zing" of an active bass like a Stingray will take a little getting used to. Many of us have been down the same road. With an active preamp, a little can be a lot in terms of tone control adjustment, and with a Stingray you have a lot of tone control at your disposal, especially compared to a passive Precision or Jazz bass. The Stingray is a high revving turbo charged double overhead camshaft bass whereas a Precision is a low revving smooth straight six workhorse.

Dial the treble down a little, maybe boost the bass a touch, and you'll soon find a tone with a little less zing. Flatwound strings make a big difference as well.

Best of luck - stick with it and you'll become more comfortable in no time with what this great bass can do for you.

Bass4worship... first let me say welcome. I experienced a similar problem on my SR5 right after restringing. The combination of a maple fingerboard and neck and new Super Slinkys may have led to this. i did what Aussie Mark said and just dialed down the treble a tad and boosted the bass. I noticed with normal playing for a week or so i had my EQ back to flat. Strings had a major impact on Musicman instruments, so it may just be finding the right combination for you, so of the people here swaer by flatwound strings. I still perfer Stainless Strings and after the initial break in you should be good to go! JOSH

Thanks guys for the help, I knew it wasn't just me. I did what you said and found the right tone. Once again this bass is one of the best I played; good feel and tone wise now that I know what to look for.

The increased treble is one of the things I like the best about my SR5.

But I play a lot of slap lines and a lot of stuff that requires that sort of articulate bass tone, like tool and early incubus and chili peppers.

if it's not to your liking, ease off on the treble on the bass a bit, and maybe boost some lows, like everybody else said.

Or, get your strings dirty, if that's the sort of sound you like. Munching on some fried chicken and then playing without washing your hands will grease those strings up fast.... as well as grease up the rest of your bass. :)

Your bass is wonderfully responsive, and when you get a little better control over it, you can make that sucker do ANYTHING.
