I was just changing strings on my Silo and the corner piece of nut between the 6th string and the end of the fingerboard broke off - and took a little sliver of wood with it.

The break doesn't look to have affected the button of the nut notch - it almost looks to me like it could very easily be set back in and glued (very clean break).

What type of glue is used to set a nut?

Thanks.

I've used wood glue to set a nut. You don't want to use crazy glue because that would permanently bond the nut to the guitar. The wood glue is secure, but can easily be removed.

Thanks alot for the replies. I think what I am going to do is to take it in and have a bone nut installed, rather than take a chance of it popping loose during a gig.

whats more important than the type of glue you use ......is how much not to use. ( although epoxy is completely off limits)

you dont need much at all.
i been using thin super glue for many years. Super Glue at Stewart-MacDonald

i also use the pipettes in order to accurately control the amount.Pipettes at Stewart-MacDonald

i use just enough to keep the nut from sliding sideways. thats really all thats needed. make sure your nut is in perfect position before you apply a couple little drops. i put the stings on...... & position the nut perfectly........then i put a tiny drop on the fret side of the nut under the b string...& the a string in the fingerboard/nut corner.

i've had to recarve many nut slots because of retards using too much glue. lots of times it's done wrong at the factorys. . i won't mention names.

I did the exact same thing with my newest AL when changing strings - knocked the bass "ear" off the nut. I used a very small amount of the thin (watery) superglue on the segment of the broken nut where it separated and was careful not to get any on the base of the broken portion - waited a few seconds to make sure there would be no "run off" in the nut slot of the neck and slid it in to mate up with the rest of the nut - it is holding excellently, and I am confident that there was no leakage into the slot itself (and I mean slot in the neck at the end of the fingerboard, not the string slot of the nut).

Care is most important....
