O/T: Converting a 412 to a 212?

Hey Guys:

So get this. I have a Marshall 1960. Really great cab, like a lot of things about it. Except one. It isn't very portable. So I was thinking:

Has anyone ever just built two cabinets for the speakers, then just thrown the speakers in? How does it sound? Anyone have any building plans!?

Why not just get a couple of Marshall 1936 cabs? They come with two 12" Celestion G12T75 speakers, same as a current production 1960a.

Building cabs is a fun project. Do a Google search- there is info available. It's not necessarily the cheapest option, though.

If cost is a factor, consider selling the cab and just buying a 2x12. About a zillion vendors out there (in addition to the amp makers) and you get your choice of speakers.

If you want to build one for fun ... go for it! There's some inexpensive software out there as well to help design size so you can tune it to the frequencies/speakers you want.

I've got a couple of 1936's. They're good cabs and much more portable than a 1960A.

They're not very expensive either (assuming they're not more where you are). Building your own would probably not be too much cheaper.

I did the math and thought it out~ the carvin legacy is as good a cab as you can find 2 celestion vin 30's for $300 it's like they throw the cab in for free!not worth it to build your own? also avatar speakers use to sell unloaded cabs and raw speakers,I'm sorta' partial to eminence wizards ,nicer than the celestion vin.30's MORE power handleing and $30 CHEAPER!!They are modeled off the vin.30's!if you are a looking for a great 2 x12 make no mistake the genz benz g flex cabs are the SH!T tons of tone and more umph than most 4x12's!!try them you can thank me later!!I attached a pic of the 4x12 genz benz they have ported cabs for killer low end and a off set front grill so they broadcast the sound as opposed to the regular flat faced 4 x12 most are use to!I painted this one for paying tribute to one of my favorite guitarists!!

If you are going the Marshall route, the 1922's sound much better than the 1936's, and they are lighter.

My dad built the cabinet under the Marshall head for me about 20 years ago. I would say that I helped but I really only cut the holes for the speakers and drilled the holes for the Marshall logo. Oh wait - I also finally got around to installing some Ernie Ball Casters on the cabinet last year! .

I'm sorta' partial to eminence wizards ,nicer than the celestion vin.30's MORE power handleing and $30 CHEAPER!!They are modeled off the vin.30's!

Wizards are great but they're not modeled after the V30, they're voiced after the Cel. G12 H30, but rated for 75 watts rather than 30. I prefer them over the H30 any day.

Another great speaker choice is the Em. Red White & Blues. I'm currently breaking one in - very impressive. Rated 120 watts RMS.
