Ok the Us Open is under way and Gary Hanser and I were lucky enough to be invited to Oakmont with Marty Albertson to play it before they shut it down to the public.

THe most famous hazard is the "Church Pew Bunkers"

Here is how not to play the hole. Gary Hanser right in the middle of them

Here is how the good players play the hole. Poppa JUST RIGHT IN POSITION A.

Marty was in it twice but that wouldnt be nice to show since he was our host and biggest customer!

We've got the British Open taking place in a months time, a couple of hundred yards from my house. I might abandon my car for the duration.

Kevin if you think Monte has a stinkin chance you dont follow golf. The rough was actually higher as the level it off right before. IT was brutal!

snickers bar he finishes in the top 10? From what I hear this course is going to even out the field a bit and actually plays to Monte's strengths. Plus I just have a hunch....its his time.

Wow - I'm jealous BP. Nothing like playing a course right before a pro tournament. Conditions at their peak, no doubt. I have had the opportunity to play Castle Pines right before The International and Harbor Town right before their tournament. Amazing. Rough so thick it would hurt your wrists to hit out of it.

Thanks for the pics.

The fire goddess' dad was telling me about and showing me pictures of this course. Looks like a hell of one. Some absurdly long holes with a par of 4.

How was the wind out there?

I just read some comments where the Oakmont members were complaining that the USGA cut the rough too much this week. They said it was much harder a couple of weeks ago.

I once played Grand National in Auburn, Alabama a week or so before what was then the Nike Tour Championship, and the rough was so thick I lost several balls that were no more than a few feet off the fairway. If you didn't step on it by accident, it was impossible to find anything.

There was an article about that golf course in the latest Time magazine I think. It said the owner installed a sand trap overnight after hearing Sam Snead made a shot past the bunker. :p

It rained last night softening the course -- should see lower scores today. Monty is still a great ballstriker, but his putter has gone south this year; he'll be lucky to make the cut.

the the cut being expected to be at 13 over par there may be a few surprises on who makes it.....I just had a hunch that Monty will clutch up this weekend. But i just heard he's at +7 not sure how many holes he's through. Anybody else want to throw a pick out there(Tiger excluded)?

Golf and bass playing have a lot of parallels for me ... one being my equipment is better than my skill level!

+1

After playing the first round that I've played in over 9 months a couple of days ago, I decided that I only want to play balls from the fairway from now on. I didn't have but a couple of opportunities to try that Tuesday.

Olazabal played well today; I wouldn't be suprised to see him hang around -- he certainly has the mental toughness to play that course. Also, I don't think Phil is out of it yet. Dark horse/sentimental pick: Lee Janzen.

The U.S. Open is a meat grinder. Almost anything can and will happen. Almost anyone can end up being the survivor at the top of the heap come Sunday. Monty is the only guy whom I would actually bet against. He's never been able to finish in a Major. He'll find a way to bollocks it up if he's even in contention. Happens every time.

"Clutch" and "Monte" don't fit when it comes to Majors.
