Obviously it works for you...but so do the other methods mentioned by other people work for them. EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion. NOBODY is wrong here. Why do I get the impression that you feel like somebody is calling you wrong? You are putting a LOT into defending yourself...You come across as if you think someone is saying your method is wrong and I do not see that happening. I think it is fabulous that your method works for you and I think you should keep on mentioning it every time the topic comes up....BUT let's keep an open mind and let EVERY ONE have the same courtesy...
Just my $.02 anyway...

If you want to get rid of one of your mutes, by all means let me know. I'm trying to figure out if I'm going to keep the Big Al 5 fretless and put a Mute on that one. And, i have a four string that would probably be cool with one, too. I told Kevin to let me know if he hated it so I could take his off his hands. No such luck, the little punk...![]()
My office just added a new coffee machine that does individual cups and they have FIFTEEN different options of coffee available for free so I've been speeding out of my mind on caffeine for three days now, so maybe I was actually a little on edge.
But, I don't mean to come off as feeling like I'm being accused of being wrong. Honestly, it's being in a hurry and rattling off different reasons that spring to mind about why sometimes a piece of foam shoved under the strings simply won't cut it. Anyone inquiring about the mute is probably aware of foam under the strings and they probably read the previous comment in the thread about how foam works just fine for him. I just think going to into a thread about a specific product (ie the BassMute) and saying over and over again that he gets by just fine with his foam and doesn't have to fuff about is rude. I don't go into his thread about things like spreadsheets tracking every little piece of minutia about his basses and say "Shut up and play." Hell, if he likes the sound of his foam mutes, I bet he'd actually love the thing since you can tweak the hell out of it individually for each string, and it'll always mute like that.
Foam is perfectly fine if you use a mute for two songs in a night. Hell, it's fine for some people for 6 hours a night. Knock yourself out.
Palm muting is great, too--but I'm not built in such a way that I can palm mute by the bridge and pluck by the neck without parts falling off. Certainly not for hours at a time.
To my ears, nothing sounds as nice as a set of Group 3 flats, mute engaged, picked by the neck with the low mids slightly boosted is the tone that I've heard in my head for a decade and I finally found after I started with foam shoved under the bridge of my Bongo. But, after all of the design work with the look of the Bongo, foam shoved under the bridge simply didn't look like good to me. It's not the same as a Precision with foam shoved under the strings--that looks fine, just like a beat to hell Fender looks amazing.
Plus the tweakability factor of honing in on exactly what you want from each string with a pick is a beautiful thing.
I've written longer posts in the last three days than I have in the last three years.
