I just picked up myJP6 to practice. It's kept in it's case. Strangest thing. The G string is buzzing. I mean not because of the low action, but choking. It's coming through the amp almost like 2 notes at once if you know what I mean.

I tried changing the string. But to no avail. The strings do all need a change I think. I noticed that the trem plate is ever so slightly angled up from the body. I mean literally a hairs width.

I'll have a look at it when i get back. Any thoughts on what it could be and how to adjust it would be appreaciated. :)

yea. all the strings on JP6 will buzz because the factory sets them so low, same as John Petrucci. There have been threads about that and Jon has stated that even Petruccis strings because because of just that. I knew about that before I got the guitar. The reason I posted is because this is coming through the amp. It does almost sound like 2 notes. Very odd sound. It also almost sounds like a sitar string. Course, i did wonder if this might be something to ring CS about. I know BP doesn't like us posting stuff like needing replacement parts on here before contacting CS. But i figured it's just a bit of choking and probably something that can be fixed quite easily.

If however I'm wrong, in the light of recent events, if any mods want to delete this and send me a PM that's cool.

HA! Fixed! Albeit temporarily. I put a teeny piece of tobacco paper in the nut groove for the G string. I'll bump this back up on Monday and give CS a ring. Maybe need a new nut.

The other thing to check (although I don't know why this should have changed since you last played) would be the height of the pickup polepieces on the G-string.

What you are describing sounds like so-called "wolf notes" which are often due to problems with the pickup polepieces.

This may explain why the slight change at the nut has resolved the problem - try it before getting a new nut...

When I first got my tele the low e string had a bit of "sitar" buzz sound when the open string was hit. I took it to a guy who said the nut didn't "break" right. A few quick strokes of a file and it was gone.
Another annoying thing is a lot of guitars seem to have the high e string "spizz" sound on the open string. Its not fret noise...its the nut.
There's a trick if you don't want to have a new nut installed and its really only one slot that giving you problems. I believe one way is to use baking powder or soda, I forget which. You put some in the slot and a drop of krazy glue, wait till it hardens and file it. What I use is some leftover piece of nut material I have...file some into a powder and use that.
If you do a search, theres some guitar sites that have more detail.

A set of files for slot cutting and filing can cost some moolah. Another trick is to buy a set of those feeler guages...usually in the auto section of the hardware store. They're only a few bucks. It should have some usuable guages or you tape some together to get the size you need. Then you use a file to serrate the edge and then you can use the feeler gauge to cut and file the nut.

Me, I do this for a quick repair on a slot. If I needed a whole new nut, I'd take it to a professional.

Thanks for the advice guys. its not the pickup. This guitar was a special order and it was finished in Jan. I got it through my EBMM dealer here in manchester in March. The guitar was perfect out of the case. It hasn't been altered in anyway. I haven't messed with the set up at all. That's why its a bit puzzling.
