Hey there,

As the topic states, i'm trying to get some advice from those who may know about oil soap. Whilst Murphy's Oil soap may be readily available within the US, it is not available as far as i know in Australia. Anyways what i have come accross is a product called, "O'cedar" pure vegetable oil soap concentrate. It states that it is a wood floor cleaner. However on the back it also states that it should not be used on unfinished woods. Has anyone tried this product or may be familiar with it enough to be confident that it is ok for cleaning the fretboard grime of my Axis? Or does anybody in Australia know how i can get my hands on the recommended Murphy's product?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Steve,

I`m not from Australia, but had the same problem finding Murphy`s products here in Poland.
I found one seller on Ebay shipping worldwide - S&H to Australia is $ 18,50.
Don`t know if it`s OK to post links to Ebay non EBMM products on the forums-if you will have problem finding the seller PM me please.
Cheers

Do you have Formby's wood care products in Australia? I've used thier cleaner for years with good results, then apply thier lemon oil to fretboards. Some people say they use lemon oil to clean but I don't think its really a cleaner and its always better to clean thoroughly before oiling. I have a bottle of Formby's furniture cleaner but I don't think they make it anymore -it's now called "Deep Cleaning Build-up Remover" but I think it's the same thing. It has a slight oily feel to it so I don't think it dries out the wood-but it doesn't leave an oily residue either.

If you can't get Formby products, how about Dunlop? They make guitar care kits that include the cleaner, the lemon oil and other stuff made for guitar maintenance so I'm sure it's fine, although I haven't tried it.

For an unfinished neck (aside from the fretboard), I would avoid getting lemon oil on it but wouldn't hesitate using the cleaner prior to sanding - or even if you're skipping the sanding step before applying the oil. Then go with what EBMM recommends, Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil gun stock finish - and the Birchwood-Casey wax.
