Hi guys and girls,

I live in belgium and i couldn't find anny kind of tru-oil.
So i went to a local music store and they reccomended ikea "skydd" oil.
I bought a botle of half a liter for a few euro's and tried it on my mm sterling.
It is just perfect! No colouring but brings out colour of the wood, looks semi glossy and feels superb!
Its a bit more satin-like than the bare wood. So if annyone has a problem getting gunstock oil, just use this cheap ikea oil. I find it even better than the original finish.
I finish of with some wax for wooden furnature and floors to seal the deal :)
Anny other experiences with alternate finishes?

Grts

Just for my understanding: You took the IKEA oil for the back of your StingRay's neck?
Was ist an unfinished neck or already oiled and waxed?
Thanks and cheers

It is the neck of my musicman sterling 4H and yes the back. It is factory oiled and waxed, but i like to re-oil it every now and then so it feels a bit more finished and protected. And if u oil it from time to time it looks great too! I left the oil on for a few minutes and the worked it in with a soft cloth. Then a bit of rest and wax to finish it. It really does look and feel better than new.
The oil is normally for use on wooden kitchen tools so it spretty harmless aswel. Great discovery for me.

Hi sanderhermans and all. Do you have a maple fretboard as well ? as i am finding it difficult to find out what to use on it, I have an IKEA about 40 k from where i live in Spain so that tip you gave was most welcome,As regards the wax furniture polish i am at a loss as all the hardware shops and stores only sell the aerosol type cleaner....Any help appreciated....Pete Bass

Ive only used it on the back, as i have a rosewood board. But it should work fine on the front too! The brand of wax i dont know for sure, ill check it later but it's a solid white wax, not a liquid. The downside to the wax i use is that it contains and smells like petrolium. But the smell goes away after a few days. So maybe there are beter options for waxing, i'm not sure. Oil alone is the most important in my oppinion so i would highly recomend taking the trip and giving it a try! As i said before i let it soak in a few minutes the buff it out. I guess the wax isn't even needed that way.

so pete, any updates?
I just checked the oil is just plain mineral oil with no additives.
the wax I use is "sapoli" but I don't know if that's to be found in many places. it contains oil and turpentine, so may not be the best solution as I mentioned before.
then for fretboard (rosewood) I use Dunlop lemon oil.

Hi Sandhermans, Got the oil "Skydd" from Ikea and am well pleased with the result, I did the neck and fretboard after removing the strings, The oil cleaned nearly all the the dirt from the neck apart from the string marks up at the first 5 frets (Inherited from previous owner) 5 Euros well spent, Strangely enough they did not stock any other types of wood care products only Skydd oil, Still searching for the wax, Shame EBMM cannot supply this as an accessory like their string wipes....Just a thought ! ;)

Birchwood Casey tru oil and wax

+1 [for the benefits of Tru Oil, I even use it on fingerboards.]

Here in te USA [united states of armagedon] gun maintenance
supplies are easy to buy locally, and I was in the habit of just
popping into Walmart to get some Tru Oil, aka "Gunstock Oil".

Lately, neither Walmart nor the gun shops carry it. This is not
a response to the guns-and-politics mess in the USA. It's simply
that military style rifles tend to have non-wooden gunstocks so
so demand for gunstock oil has nearly disappeared as military
style came to dominate the market.

So, looks like Ikea to the rescue for me, if ebay is now the only
source of Tru Oil. I never do ebay, ever.

Strangely enough the SKYDD oil was in the Kitchen accessories part of the store ! Found it after doing the Ikea shuffle a couple of times from start to exit...I reckon i walked about 2 miles, And in retrospect i wish i had picked up 2 bottles now, As for the wax i think i might try beeswax (neutral tint ?) Anybody used Beeswax before ?? ....

Should work fine, the wax is just used to fill in tiny gaps and grains in the wood. The wax on the surface comes of pretty quickly i suspect. Oil is the most important but wax just gives extra sleekness for i while i guess. I also think u can see it this way, no wax is more wood feel. Alot of wax feels more finished and sealed.
