For some of you this may mean nothing and you will know nothing about what I am talking about. For others, you will. Ok, I've decided to keep the other Petrucci that I have tuned to C at the moment. However, I want to tune it up to D G C F A D. So here is my question, What is the best way to do this when I put new strings on, I have a general idea and I have the book Dale Erlewine on how to set-up and repair guitars. But I wanted some opinions from some of you who are experienced at this as well. Any suggestions, tips??? I know, I know, I will have to adjust the intonation. Please feel free to provide your comments!

Hey Jdragon,

Alternate tunings are reason I had one of my lukes trems blocked.

I've written in open G, E minor (ebegbe), and DSUS (dadgad).

Never dropped all 6 down a whole step though.

I just retune. Using the same string set, 9's. I don't spend much time up above the 12th fret in altenate tunings so I don't worry about bridge saddle adjustment.

See if doing nothing works:D

Just for clarification, I've currently got the guitar set up C F Bb Eb G C and I want to tune up to D. Also, the guitar has 11's on it at the moment.

Keep the 11's on it.

Basically you'll need to ensure the trem returning itself to the zero position...so check the trem after youve got the strings good and stretched...you may also need to adjust the truss and the intonation as well. Shouldnt be that bad to be honest. Routine stuff seems to come easy on these. Altough I had an electronics issue, but that will be solved shortly.

What happened to yours OrangeChannel. Also, I know tuning up is going to pull the trem way up, should I just tune up and then lower the bridge or should I loosen the bridge first?? Just curious, I want to be able to learn but at the same time not screw things up. I know, some of you will say just take it to a really good tech if you don't think you know what you are doing, but if I do that I will not learn as much as if I actually did it with my own hands instead of just watching. I prefer doing it with my own hands and not having to fork over $50 or more just to have them tune it for me.

tune first, then tighten the trem claw secondly. it's a trial and error process to be honest. that's usually how i do it.

Jon's taking care of sme funky issues with the electronics, I usually do most of it mysef, but this time around I figured I'd only make things worse. Tone knob switch and volume make the pickups output like a quarter of what they should be. It onlly happened after I adjusted the trem. So I resoldered the leads to the jack, which worked for about 45 minutes each time. I figured it was finally tme to give up, plus when I recieved it, it had the usual stress crack problem, which wasn't really a total issue to me, but snce I was sending it for some of Jon's guitar electronics TLC, I figured I'd have him swap the body out too so it could be every penny I paid for. Can't wait to get it back! in the meantime I can rock my Pearl Redburst.

Your output problem came from adjusting your trem?? Just another quick question. I've heard that the easiest method for checking intonation is to do a harmonic at the 12th fret and then fret the 12th. Any suggestions about this??

Well thats not where it came from, I thought it may have had something to do with the trem claw ground (which it probably didn't). Weird, I think the store I went to with it to try some amps the day before cursed me since I wouldn't buy.

Hey just something else I thought of. I have never tuned a guitar with locking tuners. How do I approach tuning up with locking tuners because how I understand it, you shouldn't have to turn the tuning keys much to get the guitar in tune??
