Old Steel Guitar Player Needs Help!

I'm an ol' ex-steel guitar player that was a student and friend of Ernie Ball in the early 50's when he taught in Burbank. I would like to get back into playing and my old triple neck Fender is long gone. I've been checking out steel guitars and saw an ad for a Carter Starter pedal steel. I would appreciate any thoughts from the forum to help me make a good choice on a selection to get reconnected to the great sounds of a Steel Guitar. I still have some of Ernies techniques and dynamics inside my ol' cranium. Thanks
