Hey all,

Im currently looking into getting a silhouette standard, HSH and have a few questions. Ive seen two different era's of silo going and wanted to know peoples opinions etc. So the first is an off white 1990's silo, has a lovely birdeyes maple neck, 6 bolt etc. The second is an all black 2011 standard silo. Both hsh.

I cant say im looking for a mega vintage sound, im wanting a neck sound similar to a strat (overdriven rythum with enough bite for stuff) so can anyone comment on the single coil neck sound of a silo? is it nice or 'useable'? And then having a humbucker in the bridge - is old better than new?

I play mostly church stuff, think U2/Coldplay esk.. but i want the flexibility to go (a little) heavier.

Im also trying to think a bit about re-sale ... just for investment purposes.. they are around the same price.. the 2011 in slighlty better shape.. but the neck looks a little plain, seems the newer stuff doesnt look as nice (although im sure it plays just as well).

All input welcome, Thanks!

I have a Silhouette HSH and find that it is is very versatile and sounds great. With 3 pickups, a 5way switch, volume and tone controls it is up to you to find your sound. The pickups are not as high output as the ones on my JP6, but the heights are adjustable, so there is even more room to tweak. Position 2 gives you a split neck humbucker with the single and position 3 gives you just the single; lots of great single coil options there. If you want the SSH, go with the Silhouette Special. As for re-sale, don't worry about that because you will not end up selling it. Old vs new, just but a new one, play it lots and enjoy it for the fine instrument that it is. Youtube has lots of demos for the the Silhouette and Silhouette Special (Elmer F. has some great blues rock stuff with the Silhouette Special)

Silhouettes are great for cleans - perfect for a church type setting. But you can easily get hard rock tones if that is what you are after. Highly recommended.

For the choices, I'd just go with the newer one unless there is some really cool feature about the old one that speaks to you. Birdseye maple necks do look really cool... but a 'plain' neck plays just as well. As far as 'investment' goes I don't think the 90s model will fetch more on a resale than a new one a few years down the road.

Thanks guys - I figured the later one would be the better investment .. and I did think that about the neck, thanks paranoid. Im gonna go for it - £625 .. dont feel I can go wrong for that ... only a year old. :)

HSH standard silo is a real cool guitar. Got one some weeks ago and I have to say I love it more than the Silo Spec I had before. Very versatile guitar which suits so many styles and great clean tones. Also the sc-options are very good and useful.

Just some iPhone pics - haven't had chance to plug it in properly yet but even unplugged it's just lovely.

All black with maple fretboard and non matching headstock, exactly how I would like a Silhouette! Congrats on that steal!

Cheers guys! So happy wit the single coil options, smooth but cutting :) I'm using a JHS morning glory for some pushed clean stuff and they just sound so good.

Had it a few weeks now .. considering selling everything else. Really loving the middle single coil (which I was never fussed about on my old strat). bridge bucker is so nice, Had an SG I sold a while back as it was a bit brittle for me, this is just so smooth in comparison.

Thanks for the input guys
