I have a Sting Ray 4 string about 3 years old. The setup seem fine (to EB specs for relief and string height) but I get a mechanical buzz when I play an open A (then don't play an open A right.... :D ). It appears to be coming from the bridge, but it's seems to vibrate all the way up the neck to the headstock.

I've checked as many parts as I can think of. Tuning Key, Nut, Frets, Springs, Saddle, etc... If I push down on the A string before the net, it still vibarates (same at the bridge also)

When I play an A at the 5th fret on the E, I do not hear the buzz (thinking it may be a pitch kind of thing).

Any ideas?

Thank you.

I had a buzz on my 92 Ray that was caused by a loose tuning key (where the flat part of the tunner is held by the shaft of the tunner). I took the key off and put it in my bench vise and bent it closed. Now their is no rattle.

I had the same problem with the same string, that buzzed when open played with a pick, on a brand new Bongo. Seemed like if the responsible part was the nut on the headstock, that keeps A and D strings down.

Bovine gave me the following advice, and it worked well :

"That sounds to me like the string is wound around the post badly. Make sure the string around the post is traveling downward. In other words, the first wrap should be highest on the post while the last wrap should be down near the headstock.

See if that does it. If not, could be the nut slot for that strings needs a little build-up, but I bet it's the wrap around the post."

Thanks Bov'.

I hope this will solve your buzzing.

Hmm...interesting

I seem to stil have this problem even after several string changes. When I play an open G it almost always buzzes.

On the G string, it can't be a problem with the headstock nut, because only the A and D stings are in contact with it. Or is your headstock different, with a nut for the D and G Strings ? If so, make sure that the string has a clear contact with the nut or it will buzz against it while playing an open chord. If you got no nut on the G string or if it still buzzes, even with a clear contact, I sorrely have no idea what it could be.
