I was one of the lucky few who got to attend the Open House. It was a tremendously generous undertaking and very much appreciated by all, I'm sure. I understand it won't be happening again any time soon...and for good reason, I'm sure, as it must have been very expensive. However, I just want to share a possible Open House-style option based on a recent experience I had.

I have been in the market for a good acoustic guitar for a while and, after playing quite a few at the NAMM show, decided that Breedlove Guitars made one that best suited me. My girlfriend did some research on her own and discovered that Breedlove puts on something called the "Extraordinary Experience" once a year for about a dozen or so people. She bought it for me as a surprise. It's a four-day-long event at their factory in Bend, Oregon and it has quite the itinerary... everything from white water rafting to an exotic car run, master classes, barbecues, a luau, and on and on. Ultimately, you go to the shop and spend a day picking through their stash of exotic woods and designing a custom guitar that they build for you with your chosen woods. The price was $5,000/person (next year it's going to be $6,000) and that included everything except the air travel to Bend (bringing along a spouse or someone else who was not getting a guitar cost an extra $1500). It also included a $5,000 allowance (suggested retail value) toward your custom guitar...the "ultimate souvenir" as they call it. Most people got upgrades way beyond that, however (woods, custom inlays, etc.) Mine ended up at $8,000. Altogether, it was really fantastic and very well worth it.

SLO is a pretty cool destination as well, of course, with wine country nearby and lots of other things to do. Solid body electrics are much different from acoustics, obviously, but I think the concept could still work to some extent. It would pay for itself, anyway...

Just a thought... sure would be fun. I'd pay for it in a second.
