pretty much as my SR5s
which , of course, are quite different in naturethe onboard preamp, plus the mahogany construction go together to make this an instrument of fine tone with excelent feedback control, but if you want big sound unplugged, buy my preowned doghouse

I'm with Jack. I've played Taylor, Martin, Ovation, Washburn, Guild and they all blow. I've heard some interesting legends about the Earthwood, but they're recollections passed down through the generations.

Depends what you want it for. I recently bought one to noodle around on at home and take on trips. It's a Michael Kelly Club Bass. It's pretty nice. Wasn't too much coin. The cheaper Dean was crap. The more expensive Breedlove wasn't worth the extra money IMHO. I liked the neck on the Kelly way more than the Breedlove anyway.

I have an Applause AE-40. It's short scale, and they don't make them anymore. You can probably find it used very cheap, between $100 and $300.
Now, for that kind of money, you're probably thinking it's crap, but to me, it's got a great acoustic sound - loud, deep, and tight. It's got a piezo system that no longer works on mine, so I can't comment on that. I've got it in my bedroom and play it almost every night before bed, and I'm always impressed on how good it sounds. Google some online reviews, and see if you can play one for yourself, you might be surprised with the bang for the buck this ABG has.

Had a Farrington which was crap sold it to get a M Kelly Phoeneix whichwas much better but still had some flaws (a let a friend borrow it an it got ran over in a parking lot during loadout - he paid to replace it but I haven't done so yet, but I do like/have been looking at the Martins)

If you plan to plug it in there are lots of options.
But if you plan to use it acoustically, then there is only one option currently in production: Tacoma CB-10 Thunderchief...
Check this bass out side by side with any other ABG and you will be blown away by it's volume and tone - I was!
It's great for the "living room concert" with another guitar or two, I've not seen any other ABG that could project like this one (Earthwood being the exception!).

agreed! I have a nice Grestch ABG that is gorgeous, nice to play and sounds great. It is louder than 90% of ABGs I have played but still doesn't approach the Tacoma in volume,
I played an Earthwood years ago (before I knew what it was) and later when looking for an ABG, couldn't figure out why none of them lived up to my memory.

For me, I bought an ABG for the living room so volume and projection are the most important characteristics for me. Like I said, most of them will sound great plugged in.
I went into a bunch of stores (manhattan and NJ area) and found one here, one there and nothing was grabbing me. Then I went to the Totoma GC and found they had a bunch of ABGs in stock.
I initially avoided the Tacoma on price - I didn't take it down to try it out, but the sales guy said "just check it out for kicks"... It was night and day louder and richer than anything else they had. I was originally looking in the $500 range and I don't know the exact models, but I recall trying a Fender, an Ovation, a Guild, an Ibanez and an Epiphone and nothing came close. In other stores where I usually only found just one ABG in stock I had also tried a Michael Kelly and a Washburn.
Needless to say, it was a "light bulb moment" for me and I left with the Tacoma - and never regretted it.

I was out looking for a acoustic bass guitar for a long, long time. Tried everything on the market more or less. I ended up with a Tacoma Thunderchief. Like it alot even when compared to lots more expensive acoustic bass guitars.

i don't mean to use profanity again but..........when i bring the Takamine out in front of the fire......she holds up rather well to two acoustic guitars,a mandolin and a snare with brushes.........that's what an acoustic is about right?.............around the fire...........
man i soooooo wish that we were able to get an EBMM acoustic bass..........

If you can go semi-acoustic, then Godin's A4 or A5 are very sweet, especially the fretless versions. They are not very loud as acoustic instruments go, but the action and tone are amazing.
