Orpheum theater, perfect end of a holiday. Anyone from around here going? I guess JP can't crack out the Stallion proto for that show, can he? :)

Yes - I'm going. I haven't missed a DT show in these parts going back pre-Awake tour.

Ok I'm not kidding. This was the best DT live show I've seen them perform since their tour to support Falling into Infinity (1997). Mangini really rules. Myung's new 6-string Bongo with the narrow neck seemed inseparable and perfect for him, Rudess' stage gimmicks and playing are more fascinating than ever, and it's priceless to hear JLB hit the hights again in the old songs. And of course JP. His live tone was remarkable. And I somehow want a JP7 now, lol.

But most importantly - they had so much fun on stage and showed it. I feel like a teenage old fan boy again :).

Yes - the band had tons of energy. Myung was much more animated than usual. Mangini's solo was unbelievable. Usually drum solos are like, yawn, but it was spectacular. Mike did a great job with the old tunes and thay didn't pick easy ones for him to play. I noticed a lot of eye contact which I'm sure helped with cues. The crowd loved him.

Jordans tilting stand was quite cool. He's got all the cool toys!

The special guest was some guy who was introduced as not being new to the band. He played cello on Beneath the Surface. Sounded cool. Crowd was yelling Eugene? I missed his name when JLB introduced him.

JP was awesome, did a good job with vocals and was working the crowd a lot. Great show!

Edited to add: I saw Gary Cherone outside the venue and was hoping he'd join the band on something - I was thinking Lines in the Sand, but it didn't happen.

The guest was Eugene Friesen, he's a professor for cello at Berklee. The crowd wasn't totally appreciative of him being the special guest, but he was great. Showed that DT is a true musican's band.

Yea Jordan's stand and iPad wizardy was great ;).

Indeed, the response to Mangini was heartfelt. Already when James introduced him the venue exploded. Agree totally on the solo. Wonder how many of his former students where present? :)

saw them in toronto on friday

I've seen them 4-5 times before, but they definitely had a different vibe to them this time, a lot more energy and crowd interaction, best I've seen them.

Mangini was great, although I saw Marco Minnemann drum a 20 min solo the next night with the aristocrats, which totally wrecked the previous night for me :)

It was quite an awesome show! I just wish they'd stop playing the Orpheum. The accoustics there make everything sound like mush when they mix too loud (which they always seem to do). It makes hearing some of the solos difficult over the distorted noise from too much crap bouncing around all the hard surfaces. I ran into a guy I work with that at the show who thought the same thing and said "if I didn't know exactly what they were playing already I'd have a hard time picking out some of the more precise parts".

However, the song choices blew me away! Mangini was a beast! Overall the energy on stage was amazing and I can't wait til they come back!

I was confused when I thought I may have heard a few boos for him. Is there a story there?

Totally agree on sound. Mushy. Form where I was I oddly had barely any bass...

You heard right. Some clowns booed. I think the announcement of a "special" guest raised some weird hopes. For DT, Friesen was a special guest, a pro musician who played with them before. I think some folks in the audience however didn't perceive a cellist as "metal" or "special guest". Prolly the same type of guys who yelled around during "Silent Man" ;).

Speaking of "weird" responses, I felt a little bad for Trivium. Sure, it's hard to open for a huge act like DT and bear their specialized audience. But everyone sitting and playing on their phones while these guys rocked their butts off, that was a little unfair. They did great and I thought they had good energy and attitude.

I've seen three shows there in totally different seats (Satriani, G3, and now DT) and it was like that every time. I HATE that venue!

That's crappy, I really liked how they did Silent Man and thought he was great.

Yeah, LOL. A seated venue is NOT where Trivium should be playing. You really need a floor to see them where the crowd can get crazy and get the place energized. Also, most of the DT fan base that can afford all the best seats are probably not in the age demographic for Trivium as well. I have to hand it to them though, they played great and had a great attitude about it despite the lack of feedback from the crowd. I have a lot more respect for them now. I just wish they'd stop the growl/scream vocals cause I love the rest of their music!

Ah, I guess that would make sense. The first time I saw Joe Satriani live I was horrified when I suddenly heard a ton of booing in the crowd when the band was coming on stage. It took me almost a minute to realize they were yelling "STUUUUUUUU" for Stu Hamm ;)
