I know this isn't bass related but since this is an international forum, I feel it is worth the post.

I've been wanting to finish out my Ph.D. but tend to lose focus here and there. Ben (oldtoe) has given me a kick in the pants. While I'm eyeing Oregon State University, I feel a pull towards trying academics abroad. Can anybody recommend, provide first hand experiences or give me information on universities in Australia, Canada or New Zealand? If possible, info about the math departments would be greatly appreciated.

Please PM or email me since I don't want to clutter up the forum w/ a non-bass related thread.

Much thanks in advance.

Gav, I may make it to Australia eventually, even if it is as a poor grad student. Tiffles, if I am down there for school, I'll set aside a savings account so I can afford a fly rod.

I am actually doing a post grad research degree at Queensland University of Technology. Im doing it in Marketing though, not maths, so i cant really comment on that aspect of it, but in general it is a really great university. They are pretty nice to academics there, and they give out research grants, and give you jobs as tutors etc, so the money is decent, (as decent as post grad research money is). The website is www.qut.com if you want to find out more.

Also Q.U.T is in Brisbane, so you would be close to Gav

Australian unis are generally very good, but very expensive for overseas students who have to pay the course fees upfront. Australian students take out the local version of a student loan, known as HECS, which is repaid out of your salary once you're working full time after graduating.

I can't help you on which universities have good mathematics faculties.

True, but isn't that better than having to pay thousands of dollars of course fees up front?

To really make you hate me Tiffles, I should mention that university education was FREE when I did my degree back in Noah's time, courtesy of the Labor government

Thanks for the info Mark. I'm pretty much gonna go wherever they pay me to go. I'm not holding out for it but I'll try. Would be fun to live someplace very different for awhile.

Also, depending on the money situation, I am seriously considering putting together an Aussie EBMM Forum Member tour. I need a little break from my current life.
