Lisa's wondering eye thread got me thinking... It seems like there are a lot of skinny people bass players here. As a doc, that makes me happy :D Can't help the health education part of me.

If you want to really know how low your bottom can go, input your height and weight and get your BMI (body mass index).

This link is not for the faint of heart.

Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

This is what happens when you subsist on beer alone:

Stank = 19.8
Figjam = 18.9
GassieBall = 22.0

Sorry, it doesn't work that way. These guys are young. When I was in my 20s I was as skinny as Dr. Stankface. On my wedding day 20 years ago I weighed about 145.

Now I weigh between 175 and 180.

Just wait until middle age, folks.

Now, if you're a hardcore heroin addict like Steebo you can stay skinny forever....

JUST KIDDING!

BMI is such a gross calculation it is worthless.

In my prime, I could bench 265, squat 405, leg press 1000 and run a 4.6 40. I weighed 192, had a 30" waist and about 10% body fat. BMI calcs said I was obese. Go figure.

Yeah, I know. I'm 35 and my metabolism is totally slowing down compared to when I was a young 20-something. But I'm gonna fight it, dude. No heroin needed!

Edited for Maddog: Tom, you're totally right. It doesn't make sense for people who are all muscle. It's really just an index that always has to be interpreted in light of the individual. But it's a good tool to start people thinking about their health.

I almost clicked on that link and then I thought, "Wait, I need a smoke and my martini glass is empty."

Whew! That was close.

I agree according to the BMI I would have to weigh 160 pounds to achieve normal weight. At 165 (my high school wrestling weight)I look sickly..........I prefer to be around 175.(BTW Tom, I benched 285 in high school:D )

+1 BMI is a useless measure for people with a lot of muscle.

My BMI reading was "obese" when this pic was taken .....

That's a classy car. Any specs?

Yeah, Ahnold would have been measured as "obese" in his prime. So I look at his BMI and say, well, you are the Terminator.

On the other hand, when I had a 5'0" 305 lb patient the other day for a patient who had diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, it gave me a useful tool to discuss goals.

Actually, very nice Randy. My legs are my strength. Took me a year to work up to the 265. Took me 3 months to work up to the 405 on squat. I still lift but nothing as crazy. The spinal compression alone started putting me off from going heavy.

Hey Mark, I may need some advice on deadlifts. Never done 'em but the workout I'm using has me doing them in the next stage. I figure in the least, go light until I get used to the motion but I'm still a bit apprehensive.

Build up core strength first with compound exercises (bench, pullups, dips, squats) before you go heavy on deadlifts. And don't use any crutches such as a belt, gloves or wrist straps.

My weight swings between 143 and 155 or so, depending if I am drinking lots of coke (groove juice!) and eating unhealthy snacks. I'm not as young as I used to be! My BMI is prolly 20.2 give or take.
