Teenagers are not invincible, despite what they may believe. Our community has been devastated this week when Sunday night 4 teens failed to negotiate a highway curve 1 mile south of town. The vehicle rolled several times, ejecting and killing the driver. When it came to rest in a corn field, it exploded killing the other 3 boys. One was my son's best friend from elementary school. Another, the kid of good friends of ours who we bowl with.

My son is in a funk. So I've got one funeral this morning and another tomorrow.

Hug your teen. Remind them to stay safe. Remind them to buckle up.

We have had similar incidents here recently. I always have to remind my son and all of his friends to buckle up... every single time! They just don't get it or somehow it ain't cool. I use to tell them "put on your seatbelt, I'm going to try something, I seen it in a cartoon but I think I can do." That worked when they were younger. Now I just yell at all of them, “BUCKLE UP! You're in a car!"

A day doesn't go by that I don't get that sick feeling of worry knowing my 16 yr old daughter is driving now. I try not to think about it but it's scary. I nag her all the time about being safe and she does great. I'm more worried about someone else hitting her.

We usually get a rash of these incidents around prom season. My kids are only 10 and 12 but we already talk to them about this stuff.

sometimes I truely feel lucky to have made it through my teen years....with a lead hot foot, which has subsided(for many years now). Unfortunately my home town has expeirianced its fair share of deadly teen accidents....as the main road leading into town is lined with Palm trees for 3 miles straight.

its good to know that your son has a great parent to lean on in a time like this.....my best friend past away from Lukemia in 7th grade. It was a real tough thing and luckily I had a strong family foundation to help me cope and get through it.

Appreciate your loved ones!!

Just returned from the funeral, one of the most sad and terrible things I've been at in a LONG while. There were about 300 kids from the high school there as well as teachers, etc. The church was packed. The young man's two best friends spoke briefly after the mass until they couldn't speak anymore and just turned and hugged each other sobbing. They weren't the only ones.

The mother of one of the other boys killed was there, too. We know her as well (small town) and felt terrible she was there alone. That young man's funeral is Saturday and my son will be going to that as that was his best friend until high school. I didn't know the other two boys killed, but their funeral is tomorrow, right before the home high school football game which was moved ahead an hour to accomodate the funeral.

I don't ever want to go through what our friends just had to, burying their son today.
